Maxwell Hairston, Bills’ First-Round Pick, Named in Sexual Assault Lawsuit

Deep Look

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Maxwell Hairston, the Buffalo Bills’ first-round draft selection, has been accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Kentucky.

The complaint alleges that in 2021, while Hairston was attending the University of Kentucky, he entered a woman’s dorm room without invitation, disregarded her refusal to engage in sexual activity, forcibly removed her clothing, and sexually assaulted her. The Associated Press does not identify individuals alleging sexual assault.

Attempts to reach Hairston’s representatives for comment on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

The Buffalo Bills declined to comment on the lawsuit, referring instead to remarks made by general manager Brandon Beane during April’s NFL draft. At that time, Beane said the team had conducted a “full investigation” into a 2021 allegation involving Hairston, whom he described as “an impeccable kid.”

“So that’s unfortunate when things like that are attached to someone’s name. And in this case, doesn’t seem to be anything there,” Beane said during the draft.

Hairston, 21, hails from West Bloomfield, Michigan, and played three seasons at Kentucky (2022-24) before the Bills selected him 30th overall in April. He is expected to compete for a starting cornerback role in the upcoming season.

The Bills are currently in their offseason period and are set to reconvene later in July for training camp.
