Chargers Beat Eagles 22-19 in Overtime Thriller

Deep Look

The Los Angeles Chargers delivered a gritty, resilient performance Monday night, edging the Philadelphia Eagles 22-19 in overtime at SoFi Stadium. The victory came on the leg of kicker Cameron Dicker, who nailed a 54-yard field goal to put the Chargers ahead, and on the hands of safety Tony Jefferson, who intercepted Jalen Hurts at the 1-yard line to clinch the win.

Dicker, perfect on the night with five field goals, tied the game late in regulation with a 46-yarder and then ended it in overtime. His clutch kicking gave the Chargers their ninth win of the season, pulling them within two games of first place in the AFC West.

“We refuse to lose,” said head coach Jim Harbaugh, visibly emotional after the game. “This win belongs in the same discussion as the birth of my seven children and my wedding day.”

The win was far from clean. The game saw a combined 10 sacks, nine field goals, and six total turnovers—five by the Eagles. But the Chargers found a way to persevere behind a heroic effort from quarterback Justin Herbert.

Herbert, playing just days after surgery on his broken left hand, finished 12 of 26 for 138 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked a career-high seven times but kept plays alive with his legs, rushing for 66 yards on 10 attempts.

“He’s a competitive maniac,” Harbaugh said. “It felt like we were watching a movie. He’s out there with a broken hand, running and throwing. Unreal.”

Herbert revealed he made the decision to play nearly a week earlier. “The first couple days were rough,” he said. “It was all about getting the swelling down and being able to grip the football.”

While Herbert gutted it out, the Chargers defense rose to the occasion. None more so than veteran safety Tony Jefferson. In overtime, after the Eagles converted a crucial 4th-and-4 due to a neutral zone infraction, Hurts targeted Jahan Dotson deep. But Jefferson, playing in double coverage, came down with the interception just inches from the goal line.

“I told Cam Hart last night, ‘Tip me the ball, I’ll be there,’” Jefferson said. “The football gods were looking out for me.”

On the other side, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had a night to forget. He threw four interceptions, including two in the first quarter—one of which led to a bizarre sequence involving two fumbles. On the same play, Hurts threw a pick, recovered a fumble, and then fumbled again, with the Chargers ultimately taking possession.

“I didn’t play well enough to win the game,” Hurts admitted postgame. “We lost, and that’s on me.”

The Eagles also struggled with discipline, committing six penalties and managing just one touchdown—a 52-yard run by Saquon Barkley early in the fourth quarter that briefly gave them a 16-13 lead. Barkley was a bright spot, finishing with 122 yards on 20 carries, his best performance since late October.

Jake Elliott matched Dicker kick-for-kick for most of the night, hitting from 54, 30, 41, and 44 yards. But it wasn’t enough to overcome Philadelphia’s offensive inefficiency, which included too many drives ending in field goals and not touchdowns.

“We moved the ball well against a really good defense,” said Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni. “But we didn’t finish. Field goals, turnovers—those things add up. That’s on me.”

The loss marks the third straight for the defending Super Bowl champions, who fall to 8-5 and are now sliding at the worst possible time. In contrast, the Chargers have momentum, improving to 9-4 and staying firmly in the AFC playoff picture.
