Deep Look: Democratic Lawmaker Asks Judge to Remove Trump Name From Kennedy Center

A Democratic lawmaker is asking a federal judge to intervene and block efforts to attach President Donald Trump’s name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, intensifying a growing legal and political dispute surrounding one of Washington’s most prominent cultural landmarks.

Rep. Joyce Beatty, an Ohio Democrat, filed a motion Wednesday arguing that Congress clearly intended the Kennedy Center to remain solely dedicated to former President John F. Kennedy. The filing seeks to reverse the decision by a Trump-appointed board of directors to rename the historic venue the “Trump-Kennedy Center.”

According to Beatty’s legal motion, adding Trump’s name without congressional approval violates the purpose of the institution and undermines its status as a national memorial to Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963.

“Renaming the Kennedy Center for President Trump — without any authorization from Congress — undermines the Center’s raison d’être,” the motion states, arguing that the change frustrates the venue’s role as the nation’s only memorial to Kennedy in Washington, D.C.

Board Vote Sparked Immediate Controversy

The controversy began in December when the Kennedy Center’s board — largely selected by Trump — voted to rename the institution. Supporters of the decision argued Trump deserved recognition for overseeing renovation plans and modernization efforts for the performing arts center.

However, the move immediately drew criticism from Democrats, historians, arts leaders, and members of the Kennedy family. Critics questioned whether the board had the legal authority to change the name of a federally designated memorial.

Beatty’s motion emphasized that lawmakers historically took steps to ensure the center remained dedicated exclusively to Kennedy. According to the filing, Congress was particularly careful to prevent other names from appearing on the building’s exterior.

“Congress was particularly sensitive that no other names appear on the Center’s exterior walls,” the motion noted, underscoring the legislative intent behind the memorial.

Despite the controversy, Trump’s name was added to the Kennedy Center facade just one day after the board’s decision. The change also appeared on the institution’s website and social media platforms, further cementing the rebranding effort.

Lawyers Call Move “Illegal”

Beatty’s legal team, including Norm Eisen of Democracy Defenders Action and attorney Nathaniel Zelinsky, argued that the renaming represents an abuse of authority.

“We are asking the court to enforce the law and reverse this illegal renaming,” the lawyers said in a joint statement. “This abuse of power is an attack on the rule of law and the memory of John Kennedy and cannot stand.”

The legal challenge marks the latest development in a broader dispute surrounding Trump’s influence over the Kennedy Center.

The Kennedy Center, a cornerstone of Washington’s cultural scene since opening in 1971, is also scheduled to close this summer for a major renovation expected to last approximately two years.

That plan has triggered a separate legal challenge from a coalition of eight cultural and historic preservation groups. The organizations are seeking to block physical changes to the iconic building, citing concerns about preserving the historic structure.

The renovation and rebranding efforts have combined to create an ongoing political and cultural dispute over the future of the institution.

Beatty’s Role On The Board

Beatty is an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center board due to her position in Congress. Earlier this month, a federal judge ruled that she could attend board meetings but stopped short of requiring the board to allow her to vote on decisions, including the closure and renovation plans.

That ruling left Beatty with limited influence over the board’s actions, prompting her legal motion seeking court intervention.

Symbolic Importance Of The Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center remains one of the most prominent cultural landmarks in Washington, hosting performances, national celebrations, and the annual Kennedy Center Honors. Its dedication to President Kennedy has long been viewed as both symbolic and historic.

Supporters of Beatty’s motion argue that altering the name risks politicizing a national memorial designed to honor Kennedy’s commitment to arts and culture.

With legal challenges now underway, the dispute over the Trump-Kennedy Center name change could ultimately be decided in federal court, setting a precedent for how national memorials can be altered in the future.
