Deep Look: Emily Gregory Victory Boosts Democrats in Trump’s Florida Backyard

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida Democrats gained renewed optimism after Emily Gregory won a special election in President Donald Trump’s home district, flipping a Republican-held seat in a region long dominated by the GOP. The victory marks a notable political shift in Florida as both parties prepare for a critical midterm election year.

Gregory, a 40-year-old political newcomer and fitness business owner, will now represent a state legislative district that includes Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Palm Beach resort. Her win provides Democrats with a symbolic victory in one of the country’s most closely watched political regions.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried described the result as a sign of changing political momentum.

“The pendulum swings in both directions,” Fried said, adding that winning in Trump’s home district demonstrates that Democrats can compete statewide. She emphasized that Gregory’s victory could signal broader opportunities for Democrats in November.

Political Newcomer Gains National Attention

Gregory’s win marks her first entry into elected office and immediately thrusts her into the national political spotlight. She acknowledged that her lack of political experience may have helped her campaign by allowing her to connect directly with voters.

“I believed in myself the whole time,” Gregory said, describing her approach as grounded in community issues rather than national political battles.

Gregory said she focused her campaign on economic concerns affecting local residents, including rising insurance costs in hurricane-prone areas, as well as grocery and fuel prices. She emphasized that her campaign did not center on opposing Trump directly but instead addressed everyday concerns facing voters.

“I just see myself as very embedded in my community,” Gregory said, adding that she plans to prioritize affordability and access to health care when she takes office in Tallahassee.

Trump-Backed Candidate Falls Short

Trump endorsed Republican candidate Jon Maples and cast a mail ballot in the election. On the eve of the vote, Trump reiterated his support for Maples on social media, highlighting backing from Palm Beach County supporters.

As of Wednesday, Trump had not publicly commented on the election outcome.

Gregory flipped a seat previously won by a Republican by 19 percentage points. Trump carried the district by 11 points in the 2024 presidential election, underscoring the significance of the Democratic victory.

Democrats See Momentum Building

Florida Democrats also expressed optimism about another closely watched race. Brian Nathan, a veteran and union worker, holds a narrow lead in a Tampa-area state Senate contest, though the race remains within recount range.

Fried praised both Gregory and Nathan as strong candidates who capitalized on shifting voter sentiment and local economic concerns.

She also pointed to recent elections where Democrats narrowed margins in traditionally Republican districts as evidence of a more competitive environment in Florida.

Republicans Remain Dominant but Watching Closely

Despite the Democratic victory, Republicans continue to dominate Florida’s political landscape. The GOP holds large majorities in the state legislature and remains favored in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

However, Republican strategists acknowledged they are monitoring the results.

Ryan Smith, chief strategist for Rep. Byron Donalds’ gubernatorial campaign, said the party regularly evaluates its strategy but remains confident heading into future races.

Trump has endorsed Donalds in the governor’s race, which is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests in the state.

Gregory’s Message to Constituents — Including Trump

Gregory said she is ready to serve all constituents in her district — including Trump himself.

When asked about her message to the president, Gregory said she looks forward to working with anyone in the district.

“He’s welcome to call me, as I am his new state representative,” she said.

Her victory, Democrats say, signals a possible shift in Florida’s political environment, with implications for upcoming state and national elections.
