Deep Look: FBI Says DNA From Glove May Match Suspect in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance
Federal investigators say DNA evidence recovered from a glove found near the Tucson home of Nancy Guthrie appears to match gloves worn by a masked individual seen outside her front door the night she disappeared.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the glove was discovered in a field along a road roughly two miles from the residence. The item was submitted for forensic testing, and preliminary DNA results were received Saturday. Officials said they are still awaiting formal confirmation.
The development marks a significant step in the ongoing search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s Today. Authorities had previously stated that no suspect had been officially identified.
Surveillance Video and Suspect Description
Days before revealing the glove discovery, investigators released surveillance footage captured by a porch camera outside Nancy Guthrie’s home in Tucson, Arizona. The video shows a masked individual carrying a backpack and wearing a ski mask, jacket, long pants, and gloves.
On Thursday, the FBI publicly referred to the individual as a suspect. Officials described him as approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a medium build. He was reportedly carrying a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.
The glove recovered near the property appears visually consistent with those worn by the masked figure in the video, investigators said.
Search Activity Intensifies
Law enforcement activity has expanded in recent days. Late Friday, authorities sealed off a roadway about two miles from Nancy Guthrie’s home. Multiple vehicles from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI — including forensic units — were seen entering and exiting the restricted area.
Investigators also tagged and towed a Range Rover SUV from a restaurant parking lot nearby. Officials later confirmed the action was connected to the Guthrie investigation, though no arrests were made.
Earlier in the week, sheriff’s deputies detained a man during a traffic stop south of Tucson. Authorities did not disclose what prompted the stop, and the individual was later released. That same day, deputies and federal agents executed a court-authorized search in Rio Rico, roughly an hour south of Tucson.
Despite these efforts, officials have not announced any formal charges.
Ransom Notes and Missed Deadlines
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Arizona home on Jan. 31 and reported missing the following day. Authorities have confirmed that blood believed to be hers was found on the front porch.
Purported ransom notes were later sent to news outlets, though two deadlines for payment have now passed without further public communication from whoever sent them.
Investigators have not confirmed the authenticity of the ransom demands.
Savannah Guthrie’s Emotional Appeal
On Sunday night, Savannah Guthrie shared a video message on Instagram appealing directly to anyone responsible for her mother’s disappearance.
“It is never too late to do the right thing,” she said in the video. “We are here. And we believe in the essential goodness of every human being, that it’s never too late.”
The public plea comes as the search effort enters its third week.
Health Concerns Heighten Urgency
Authorities have emphasized concern about Nancy Guthrie’s health. According to law enforcement dispatch audio, she requires essential daily medication. Officials say she has a pacemaker and has experienced high blood pressure and heart-related conditions.
Investigators have previously revealed that DNA samples were collected from Nancy Guthrie’s property that do not belong to her or individuals known to be in close contact with her. Efforts are ongoing to identify the source of that genetic material.
The FBI also clarified that approximately 16 gloves were recovered in areas surrounding the home. Most of those were determined to be gloves discarded by volunteer searchers. The glove now undergoing forensic review is considered distinct due to its potential link to the masked suspect.
Investigation Continues
As forensic testing proceeds, investigators continue gathering evidence and following leads. Officials have urged the public to report any relevant information.
No arrests have been made, and authorities have not disclosed whether they believe Nancy Guthrie is being held locally or transported elsewhere.
The case remains active, with federal and local agencies working jointly to determine what happened and to locate Nancy Guthrie safely.
