Hollywood Icon Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Found Dead in Los Angeles Home

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 14, 2025) — In a tragic development that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond, acclaimed actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead inside their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the Associated Press that both victims appeared to have died from stab wounds. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is treating the incident as an apparent double homicide.

A Gruesome Discovery

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical call at approximately 3:30 PM and discovered a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman unresponsive. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

While police initially withheld names, a senior official confirmed that the victims were Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. No official cause of death has been released pending autopsies.

The LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division has taken over the case, with Capt. Mike Bland confirming it is being treated as a homicide.

A family member is currently being questioned, though no formal arrests have been made.

Tributes from Across the Nation

News of Reiner’s death sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans, and political leaders.

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories,” said former President Barack Obama. “Beneath all of that was a deep belief in the goodness of people.”

“Rob was the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love,” added California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “His empathy and brilliance touched generations.”

The Lear family, close to Reiner through his decades-long connection with “All in the Family” creator Norman Lear, called the news “devastating.”

“Norman often referred to Rob as a son,” they said in a statement. “He and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place.”

A Storied Career in Film and Television

Rob Reiner, born March 6, 1947, was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner. He rose to prominence playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the 1970s TV classic “All in the Family,” winning two Emmy Awards.

In the 1980s and ‘90s, he became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated directors, delivering enduring classics such as:

  • This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
  • Stand By Me (1986)
  • The Princess Bride (1987)
  • When Harry Met Sally (1989)
  • Misery (1990)
  • A Few Good Men (1992)
  • The American President (1995)

Reiner co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, which produced hits like Seinfeld and The Shawshank Redemption.

He remained an outspoken liberal activist, championing causes including same-sex marriage, early childhood education, and gun reform.

A Marriage Rooted in Art and Activism

Reiner met Michele Singer, a photographer, while directing When Harry Met Sally. The couple married in 1989 and had three children. Michele, like Rob, was deeply engaged in social causes and was often seen at charity events and fundraisers.

Reiner was previously married to Penny Marshall, the late director and actress, from 1971 to 1981.

Neighborhood Shocked by Rare Violence

Brentwood, one of LA’s most exclusive neighborhoods, is rarely the site of violent crime. The Reiners’ home is located just a mile from the site of the infamous 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, an eerie echo that has left neighbors unsettled.

Local authorities have emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
