Deep Look: House Committee Targets DOJ, Clintons in Escalating Epstein Probe

WASHINGTON — The House Oversight Committee dramatically escalated its investigation into the long-running Jeffrey Epstein case on Tuesday by subpoenaing the Justice Department for all related files and demanding sworn depositions from several high-profile former government officials, including Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The committee, led by Republicans but backed by bipartisan support, issued the subpoenas amid growing pressure from lawmakers and the public for greater transparency into Epstein’s criminal enterprise and potential connections to powerful figures.

Clintons, Former Attorneys General Among Those Subpoenaed

Among those ordered to give testimony under oath are:

The committee’s wide-reaching move signals renewed urgency in uncovering what lawmakers suspect may be concealed evidence or incomplete disclosures related to Epstein’s network, his death in federal custody in 2019, and potential government complicity or oversight failures.

Trump, DOJ Transparency, and Bipartisan Pressure

Though the Republican-led committee has faced criticism for politicizing the Epstein probe, Democratic lawmakers were instrumental in pushing for the DOJ subpoena, highlighting the investigation’s bipartisan momentum.

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the committee’s ranking Democrat, emphasized the broader stakes:

“Democrats are focused on transparency and are pushing back against the corruption of Donald Trump… What is Donald Trump hiding that he won’t release the Epstein files?”

The subpoena demands not only investigation records, but also communications between the Biden administration and the DOJ regarding Epstein — a move intended to assess whether recent decisions to withhold documents were politically motivated.

Ghislaine Maxwell Deposition Delayed Pending Court Decision

The committee had also scheduled a deposition with Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate currently serving a prison sentence for her role in trafficking underage girls. However, her interview has been postponed, as the Supreme Court considers whether to hear her appeal challenging her conviction.

Maxwell, who was recently moved from a Florida to a Texas prison facility, claims she was unjustly prosecuted, adding another layer of legal uncertainty to the probe.

Conspiracy Theories and Political Undercurrents Resurface

Since Epstein’s death in a New York City jail cell in August 2019 — ruled a suicide by the medical examiner — conservative media and online communities have fueled speculation about the extent of Epstein’s connections to U.S. and international elites.

The House Oversight Committee, particularly under the leadership of Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), has leaned into these suspicions, claiming the Justice Department has withheld key findings from the public.

The subpoenas follow recent failed efforts to unseal grand jury records in Florida tied to the early stages of Epstein’s legal history, further frustrating lawmakers and transparency advocates.

A Two-Decade Investigation Still Unfolding

Epstein’s alleged crimes span back over 20 years, involving a global network of abuse, coercion, and financial corruption. Despite his 2008 plea deal in Florida and multiple attempts to prosecute him over the years, it wasn’t until 2019 that he was federally charged with sex trafficking.

His abrupt death while in custody has left many questions unanswered, and critics argue that key political and legal institutions failed to hold him — and possibly others — fully accountable.

As the House Oversight Committee pushes forward, the subpoenas mark one of the most aggressive congressional moves yet to force long-sought accountability in the Epstein case.
