John Bolton Enters Not Guilty Plea in Classified Documents Case

GREENBELT, Md. (AP)John Bolton pleaded not guilty Friday to an 18-count federal indictment accusing him of unauthorized sharing and storing of classified national security documents. The charges claim he emailed sensitive materials to family and stored top-secret records at his residence in Maryland.

Bolton made his first appearance in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland, but declined to address reporters as he entered. His court appearance follows an indictment made public Thursday that alleges he improperly disseminated government secrets.

“Now, I have become the latest target in weaponizing the Justice Department to charge those he deems to be his enemies,” Bolton said in a public statement issued after the indictment.

Allegations: Sharing Classified Material With Family, Storing Documents at Home

Prosecutors assert that Bolton shared over 1,000 pages of diary-like notes containing sensitive, and in some instances, top-secret intelligence with two family members, widely reported to be his wife and daughter. The notes are said to have originated from briefings, internal meetings, and foreign-policy deliberations.

The indictment further alleges that portions of these communications were exposed after Bolton’s email account was hacked by operatives linked to Iran, which reportedly gave foreign actors access to the classified material he had shared.

Additionally, the indictment charges him with storing highly sensitive documents at his Maryland home, including details of foreign adversarial plans and covert U.S. operations—information that, if compromised, could endanger U.S. national security.

Bolton’s Defense: Diaries, Previous Disclosure, and Political Criticism

Bolton’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, argued that much of the material at issue consisted of unclassified diary entries from his long public service career, and that portions had been known to the FBI since 2021. He claimed these contentions were previously examined and dismissed, and asserted that the current charges reflect a politically motivated prosecution.

Lowell also pointed to an earlier public interview in which Bolton criticized others in the Trump administration for using encrypted messaging apps (e.g., Signal) to discuss sensitive matters — an example prosecutors cite to suggest Bolton recognized the boundaries for classified information.

In response to the charges, Attorney General Pam Bondi defended the indictment, stating:

“Anyone who abuses a position of power and jeopardizes our national security will be held accountable. No one is above the law.”

The indictment represents a deeper level of detail than recent high-profile cases involving James Comey or Letitia James, in that Bolton’s case is spearheaded by career national security prosecutors, rather than those working under a special or interim appointment.

The Wider Context: DOJ, Politics, and Past Conflicts

This case adds to a string of recent Justice Department actions involving figures who have spoken out against Donald Trump. Critics argue the timing and nature of the cases underscore concerns about selective enforcement and the politicization of law enforcement.

Bolton is no stranger to controversy. After leaving the Trump administration in 2019, he published a scathing memoir, The Room Where It Happened, which prompted legal and political battles over whether it contained classified information. His critics have argued that Trump sought retribution, and supporters see the new charges as a delayed continuation of earlier disputes.
