Deep Look: King Charles to Proceed With US Visit Despite Iran War Tensions
LONDON — King Charles III will proceed with a state visit to the United States next month despite growing political tensions and calls from British lawmakers to cancel the trip amid disagreements over the Iran war. Buckingham Palace confirmed Tuesday that King Charles and Queen Camilla will travel to the United States from April 27 to April 30, coinciding with celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
President Donald Trump welcomed the announcement, saying he looked forward to hosting the British monarch.
“I look forward to spending time with the King, whom I greatly respect,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It will be TERRIFIC!”
The visit comes at a delicate moment for U.S.-U.K. relations, as Trump has repeatedly criticized Britain for declining to support offensive military operations against Iran.
Growing Diplomatic Tensions
President Trump has publicly criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to allow U.S. aircraft to use British bases in operations linked to the Iran conflict. At one point, Trump compared Starmer unfavorably to wartime British leader Winston Churchill.
The criticism has fueled tensions between Washington and London and sparked debate in Britain over whether the royal visit should proceed.
Opposition lawmakers have urged Starmer’s government to cancel the visit, arguing it could embarrass the monarchy and signal approval of U.S. policies.
Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, sharply criticized the decision.
“To send the king on a state visit to the U.S. after Trump dismissed our Royal Navy as toys is a humiliation,” Davey said, accusing the government of failing to stand up to U.S. pressure.
Royal Visits as Diplomatic Tools
State visits are typically organized at the request of elected governments and serve as diplomatic tools to strengthen relationships between nations.
The decision to proceed with the visit may reflect an effort by the British government to maintain the long-standing “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom despite policy disagreements.
Trump previously visited the U.K. last September in a high-profile state visit hosted at Windsor Castle. The event included ceremonial military honors and a formal state banquet hosted by King Charles.
The visit was seen as an effort by Britain to maintain strong ties with the United States amid shifting global alliances.
Historic Second State Visit
The current trip follows a rare diplomatic move. Prime Minister Starmer personally delivered the king’s invitation to Trump in Washington in February 2025, just weeks after Trump began his second term.
The invitation marked the first time a world leader had been offered a second state visit to the United Kingdom. Trump publicly displayed the invitation letter, calling it a “great, great honor.”
Now, King Charles is returning the gesture with a visit to Washington.
King Charles’ First US State Visit as Monarch
Although King Charles has visited the United States 19 times during his lifetime, this trip will be his first official state visit since becoming king.
His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, conducted four state visits to the United States during her reign.
The upcoming visit is expected to include ceremonial events and meetings aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties.
Bermuda Visit Also Planned
In addition to the United States, King Charles will also visit Bermuda during the trip. The visit will mark his first trip to the British overseas territory since becoming monarch.
The dual-stop trip highlights the monarchy’s role in supporting diplomatic relationships and Commonwealth ties.
Balancing Diplomacy and Politics
Despite political tensions and calls for cancellation, the decision to move forward with the visit reflects Britain’s effort to balance diplomacy with domestic political pressure.
As tensions over the Iran war continue, the state visit may serve as an opportunity for both nations to reinforce cooperation and maintain strong bilateral ties.
