Deep Look
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Lionel Messi continues to shatter Major League Soccer records, becoming the first player in league history to score multiple goals in four consecutive games. The Argentine superstar netted both goals for Inter Miami in a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Wednesday night.
Inter Miami (10-3-5) extended its winning streak to four matches and remains unbeaten in its last five.
Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute after New England defender Tanner Beason mishandled a header, allowing Messi to fire a half-volley past goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.
In the 38th minute, Sergio Busquets delivered a precise pass from midfield to a sprinting Messi, who drilled a first-touch shot from the edge of the box into the right corner, giving Miami a 2-0 lead.
Messi has now scored in five consecutive matches and boasts 14 goals and seven assists in 15 regular-season appearances — second only to Nashville’s Sam Surridge, who leads MLS with 16 goals.
Óscar Ustari made five crucial saves for Miami to preserve the win.
Carles Gil netted New England’s lone goal in the 79th minute, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Revolution (6-8-6) from extending their winless streak to five games. Ivacic finished with one save for New England.
