Outlook Faces Widespread Outage as Thousands Report Email Issues
Deep Look
NEW YORK (AP) — Thousands of Microsoft Outlook users experienced significant disruptions accessing their email Wednesday night and Thursday morning, with many reporting trouble signing in or loading their inboxes.
The outage affected users around the world, prompting a surge in complaints to online tracking services. By about 11:30 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, more than 2,770 users had reported problems to the outage-tracking site Downdetector.
Microsoft 365’s status page first acknowledged the issue late Wednesday, announcing that engineers were investigating. On Thursday morning, Microsoft said it had deployed a fix — but also admitted the initial solution hit a snag.
“We identified an issue with the initial fix, and we’ve corrected it,” Microsoft 365 Status posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “We’re continuing to deploy the fix, and we’re closely monitoring the deployment to ensure no further issues are encountered.”
As of midday Thursday, Microsoft had not shared further details about the root cause of the outage. A spokesperson for the company declined additional comment when contacted by The Associated Press.
Outlook, which evolved from the former Hotmail service, is one of the world’s most widely used email platforms and is a core part of Microsoft’s suite of productivity tools for businesses and individuals alike.
