Deep Look

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA — The woman fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday has been identified as Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, a poet, and a U.S. citizen.

Originally from Colorado, Macklin Good had recently moved to Minneapolis with her partner from Kansas City, Missouri. According to official records, she had no criminal history apart from a minor traffic ticket.

A Life of Creativity and Compassion

On social media, Macklin Good described herself as a “poet and writer and wife and mom”, proudly showcasing her creative passions. Her Instagram featured a pride flag emoji and posts about family, tattoos, and home decor. One Pinterest photo shows her smiling, cheek-to-cheek with a child.

She studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia, winning a writing award in 2020. She also previously studied vocal performance and participated in high school and college choirs.

The Shooting Incident

According to witnesses and social media video footage, Macklin Good was in the car with her current partner after dropping off her 6-year-old son at school. Video shows ICE officers approaching her vehicle in snowy conditions. One officer attempts to open the door. When the car inches forward, another agent — standing in front — fires multiple rounds through the windshield at close range.

In another video, a distraught woman near the car can be heard sobbing:

“That’s my wife! I don’t know what to do!”

Trump Officials Label Her a Threat

Trump administration officials claimed Macklin Good posed a threat and labeled her a “domestic terrorist”, alleging she attempted to use her vehicle as a weapon.

Her ex-husband, speaking anonymously to protect their children, firmly rejected those claims.

“She was no activist,” he said. “I never once knew her to attend a protest. She was a devoted Christian who once went on youth mission trips to Northern Ireland.”

A Devoted Mother

Macklin Good was the mother of three children:

  • A 15-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son from her first marriage
  • A 6-year-old son from her second marriage, whose father passed away in 2023

She had primarily been a stay-at-home mother in recent years but had previously worked as a dental assistant and at a credit union.

Family Remembers Her Kindness

Her mother, Donna Ganger, told the Minnesota Star Tribune:

“Renee was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

Ganger said the family was informed of her daughter’s death late Wednesday morning. She declined to speak further when contacted by the Associated Press.

Background and Fallout

The fatal shooting has intensified backlash against ongoing federal immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota, part of a broader Trump administration crackdown involving 2,000 agents deployed to the region.

Civil rights groups and city officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have condemned the operation and demanded federal agents leave the city. Mayor Frey publicly disputed the federal claim of self-defense, calling it “bullshit” and accusing ICE of creating a “military occupation” in the city.
