Naomi Osaka, Iga Swiatek Advance to U.S. Open Quarters
Deep Look
NEW YORK — Former champions Naomi Osaka and Iga Swiatek showcased their dominance Monday at the U.S. Open, cruising into the quarterfinals and reminding fans of why each has held the world No. 1 ranking.
Osaka delivered one of her strongest performances since returning to form, defeating American star Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It was Osaka’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance since 2021.
Swiatek, the 2022 U.S. Open winner, overcame a slow start before beating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1. Down 3-1 early, the Polish star found her rhythm and rolled through 11 of the final 12 games.
“At the beginning, she was playing really fast,” Swiatek said. “Later on I felt in my bubble and in my zone.” She is now chasing her second U.S. Open title and seventh Grand Slam overall.
Osaka and Swiatek Set for High-Stakes Showdowns
Osaka will face Karolina Muchova, the No. 11 seed from the Czech Republic, for a semifinal berth. Meanwhile, Swiatek will clash with American Amanda Anisimova, who stormed past Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-0, 6-3 to reach her first U.S. Open quarterfinal. The match will be a rematch of Swiatek’s dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Anisimova in this year’s Wimbledon final.
Auger-Aliassime Stuns Rublev
In men’s action, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime delivered one of his best Grand Slam performances, defeating Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in just over two hours. The victory was only his second in nine meetings against Rublev.
“As I won the first set, I felt like I was in control of the match,” said Auger-Aliassime, who at 25 is in his fourth Slam quarterfinal. He will next face Alex de Minaur, who advanced in straight sets.
Defending Champion Sinner Dominant
Top-seeded Jannik Sinner, defending his U.S. Open crown, crushed Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. The Italian has now beaten every opponent this season except Carlos Alcaraz, setting up a quarterfinal against Lorenzo Musetti, the No. 10 seed.
Venus Williams Advances in Doubles
Off the singles court, Venus Williams and Canadian partner Leylah Fernandez defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai to reach the women’s doubles quarterfinals. After the match, Venus joked it was time for her sister, Serena Williams, to come cheer in person.
Quarterfinals on Deck
The U.S. Open quarterfinals will feature a mix of legends and rising stars. On the men’s side, Carlos Alcaraz faces Jiri Lehecka, while American Taylor Fritz takes on Novak Djokovic, a four-time champion.
In the women’s draw, Jessica Pegula meets Barbora Krejcikova, and top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka battles Marketa Vondrousova.
The stage is set for thrilling matchups as the tournament edges closer to crowning its 2025 champions.
