Deep Look: NYC Subway Stabbing Leaves Three Hurt, Police Kill Suspect

NEW YORK — A violent stabbing at a major New York City subway station Saturday morning left three people injured before police shot and killed the suspected attacker, authorities said.

The incident unfolded around 9:40 a.m. at the busy 42nd Street–Grand Central station, one of the city’s largest transportation hubs. Officers responding to an emergency call encountered a man holding a weapon described by a law enforcement official as a machete.

Police shot the suspect on the subway platform. Officials did not immediately clarify how many shots were fired or how many struck the attacker. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani later confirmed in a social media post that the suspect died from his injuries.

Victims Hospitalized

Authorities said three victims were stabbed during the attack:

  • An 84-year-old man
  • A 65-year-old man
  • A 70-year-old woman

All three victims were transported to a hospital and were reported in stable condition.

Two police officers were also taken to a hospital for evaluation following the incident, though officials did not specify their injuries.

Investigation Ongoing

Investigators are still working to determine exactly where the attack began. Officials said it may have started on the subway platform serving the 4, 5, and 6 trains or inside one of the trains.

Authorities have not yet released details about a possible motive or whether the suspect knew any of the victims.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul praised the police response, saying officers acted quickly to stop the attack.

“I’m grateful to our brave officers who acted quickly to stop the suspect,” Hochul said in a statement, adding that state officials are working closely with the NYPD as the investigation continues.

Transit Disruptions

Following the incident, police urged commuters to avoid the area due to the ongoing investigation. Subway service was disrupted, with some trains bypassing the Grand Central station.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported delays and service changes affecting the 4, 5, and 6 lines. Regional rail service at Grand Central was not impacted.

The 42nd Street–Grand Central station is one of the busiest transit hubs in the city, serving thousands of commuters each day.

Public Safety Concerns

The incident renewed concerns about safety within New York City’s subway system, which has faced periodic violence in recent years.

Authorities emphasized that the situation was contained quickly and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Police continue reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as they work to determine the full sequence of events.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials gather more details about the suspect and circumstances surrounding the attack.
