Powerball Jackpot Climbs to $1.7 Billion, No Winner Again

Deep Look

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)The Powerball jackpot has reached a staggering $1.7 billion after no ticket matched all six numbers in Wednesday night’s drawing. The winning numbers were 3, 16, 29, 61, 69, and the Powerball was 22.

This marks the 41st consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner, dating back to May 31. The massive prize now ranks as the third-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history.

The next chance to win big comes on Saturday night, when Powerball will hold its next drawing. The estimated $1.7 billion prize is based on the annuity option, paid over 30 payments in 29 years. Most winners, however, opt for the cash option, which for this jackpot would be approximately $634.3 million before taxes.

Powerball’s notoriously long odds of 1 in 292.2 million are by design — encouraging larger jackpots that roll over multiple times. Still, players can win smaller prizes in every drawing.

Powerball tickets cost $2 and are available in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
