Deep Look

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgium turned Smurf-blue on Saturday as global superstar Rihanna dazzled at the world premiere of the new Smurfs movie in Brussels.

Rihanna, who produced the film and lends her voice to Smurfette, arrived glowing and visibly pregnant, posing with children and sharing laughs alongside a costumed Smurfette. She walked into the screening arm-in-arm with partner A$AP Rocky, adding Hollywood glamour to the European event.

Directed by Chris Miller, the live-action/animated reboot follows Smurfette leading a daring mission to rescue Papa Smurf. The premiere also featured stars James Corden and Dan Levy, with many guests embracing the theme in Smurf-inspired blue attire.

The movie opens in U.S. theaters on July 18.

The Smurfs—called “Schtroumpfs” in Belgium—were created by Belgian cartoonist Peyo, and Brussels went all out to celebrate the homegrown comic icons. Festivities included Smurf-themed events at the city’s iconic Grand-Place, tourist buses and trains decked out in blue, and the famous Mannekin Pis statue costumed as No Name Smurf.
