Deep Look: Russia Condemns US-Israel Strikes on Iran as ‘Unprovoked Act of Armed Aggression’

Russia on Saturday sharply condemned the joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran, calling them a “pre-planned and unprovoked act of armed aggression” against a sovereign United Nations member state.

In a statement published on Telegram, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Washington and Tel Aviv of using concerns over Iran’s nuclear program as a pretext for pursuing regime change. Moscow demanded an immediate halt to military operations and urged a return to diplomacy.

The ministry warned the attacks could trigger a “humanitarian, economic and possibly radiological catastrophe” across the Middle East. It further accused the United States and Israel of driving the region toward “an abyss of uncontrolled escalation.”

According to the statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by phone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. During the call, Araghchi briefed Lavrov on Iran’s response to the strikes and said Tehran would seek an urgent meeting of the U.N. Security Council.

Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s condemnation of the military campaign and expressed Russia’s readiness to assist in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation.

Russia also described the targeting of nuclear facilities operating under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards as “unacceptable,” warning of unpredictable consequences. The Foreign Ministry placed full responsibility for the escalation on Washington and Tel Aviv.

“Responsibility for the negative consequences of this manmade crisis, including an unpredictable chain reaction and spiraling violence, lies entirely with them,” the statement said.

The ministry additionally criticized what it called a pattern of destabilizing actions by the current U.S. administration, accusing Washington of undermining international legal norms.

Russia has long sought to balance its relationships in the Middle East, maintaining working ties with Israel while deepening economic and military cooperation with Iran. Just last week, Iranian forces and Russian naval units conducted joint exercises in the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean, according to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency. The drills were aimed at enhancing coordination and sharing military experience.

Some analysts in Moscow have suggested that escalating tensions between Israel and Iran could divert global focus from Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, potentially affecting Western military and financial support for Kyiv.

As diplomatic efforts intensify at the United Nations, Russia has positioned itself as both a critic of the strikes and a potential intermediary — while firmly aligning itself with Tehran’s call for international action.
