Deep Look

Deadly Drone Barrage: Russia and Ukraine Trade Blows Across Borders

KYIV, Ukraine / MOSCOW, Russia (AP)Overnight drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine claimed at least four lives and left dozens injured, as both countries ramped up long-range aerial attacks. The strikes mark another volatile chapter in the ongoing conflict, now defined increasingly by unmanned aerial vehicles, guided bombs, and retaliatory missions.

The Ukrainian cities of Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Sumy came under heavy assault from Russian drones and missiles, while Ukrainian forces launched counterstrikes deep into Russian border territories, including Rostov, Stavropol, and Moscow’s outskirts.

Ukraine Struck Hard: Fires, Hospital Damage, and Rescue Team Casualties

In Ukraine’s southern Dnipro region, officials reported two fatalities and five injuries following a coordinated rocket and drone attack. A multi-story building and a business in Dnipro city were damaged, and a shopping center outside the city caught fire.

Northeastern Sumy also suffered injuries to at least three civilians, including damage to the regional administrative building following a direct drone strike on the city square.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, six people were injured, including four emergency responders caught in a “double tap” airstrike—a deadly tactic where a second strike follows the first, targeting rescuers and medics.

Russia Claims Village Gains as Air Assaults Intensify

On the frontlines, Russia’s military announced it had seized the villages of Zelenyi Hai in the partially occupied Donetsk region, and Maliivka in Dnipro. Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed or commented on these claims.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Air Force reported 208 drones and 27 missiles launched by Russia in a single night. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 183 drones and 17 missiles, but acknowledged that 10 missiles and 25 drones struck nine locations.

Zelenskyy: Drone Retaliation Is Justified and Ongoing

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a firm response, vowing to continue targeting Russian military and logistics infrastructure with Ukrainian long-range drones. He emphasized that “Russian war must have real consequences” and that no silence or passivity is acceptable after such widespread devastation.

Zelenskyy also urged Ukrainian defense manufacturers to ramp up drone interceptor production, aiming for 1,000 units per day, supported by a recently announced multi-billion-dollar U.S. defense package.

Ukraine Hits Back: Fatal Drone Strikes Inside Russian Borders

Across the border, Ukrainian drones struck multiple Russian regions. In Rostov, two civilians were killed during a drone impact, according to acting governor Yuri Slyusar. Neighboring Stavropol reported damage to an unspecified industrial facility, likely targeted for its strategic value.

Authorities briefly shut down mobile internet access—a tactic used repeatedly in Russia that has been criticized as a tool of online censorship.

Unofficial reports suggest one drone may have struck the Signal radio plant, a site known for manufacturing jamming technology. The Associated Press has not independently confirmed this report.

Drones also targeted Moscow, the Penza region, and several border areas including Bryansk, Belgorod, and Orlov. Russian air defenses claimed to have intercepted 54 Ukrainian drones, but scattered injuries and property damage were reported.

Civilian Impact Spreads in Russia’s Ingushetia Region

In Ingushetia, part of Russia’s North Caucasus region, a Ukrainian drone fell on a private home, injuring a woman and three children, according to local health authorities. The attack highlights the increasingly unpredictable and far-reaching nature of drone warfare on both sides.
