KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian drone strike hit the southern Ukrainian port city of Odesa overnight, killing a married couple and injuring at least 17 others, Ukrainian officials said Saturday.
Emergency services reported that one of the drones crashed into a residential high-rise, damaging three floors and trapping residents inside. Regional Governor Oleh Kiper confirmed that three children were among the injured.
Moscow did not immediately comment on the attack. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed it intercepted more than 40 Ukrainian drones overnight across western Russia and Russian-occupied Crimea.
Drone warfare has become a defining feature of the conflict, now stretching into its fourth year. Both sides are deploying increasingly advanced and lethal drones, transforming Ukraine into a proving ground for evolving weapon technology.
Ukraine has showcased notable drone successes, including an early June operation that damaged or destroyed nearly a third of Moscow’s strategic bomber fleet using inexpensive drones covertly deployed deep into Russian territory.
While long-range drones strike cities and military targets, smaller drones play a crucial role along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line.
A report released Thursday by the U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine documented at least 395 civilian deaths and 2,635 injuries from short-range drone strikes since the war began in February 2022, attributing nearly 90% of those attacks to Russian forces.
Overall, more than 13,300 civilians have been killed and over 34,700 injured in the conflict, according to a June 11 report by the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
