Carlos Alcaraz Extends Wimbledon Streak; Sabalenka Reaches Another Slam Quarterfinal

Deep Look

LONDON (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz is proving that even his shaky moments can’t stop his Wimbledon run. Despite losing the first set Sunday and facing pressure in the third, the 22-year-old Spaniard once again found his magic, defeating No. 14 seed Andrey Rublev 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to reach his third consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal.

The victory pushes Alcaraz’s Wimbledon win streak to 18 matches and extends his current unbeaten run across all events to 22. The No. 2 seed electrified Centre Court with a dazzling forehand passing winner while saving a break point, then broke Rublev with a sensational cross-court forehand flick that left the crowd roaring under the closed roof.

“I always said that it’s just about belief in yourself. Tennis is a sport that can change in just one point,” Alcaraz said. “One point can change the match completely, turn around everything.”

Alcaraz will next face 2022 semifinalist Cam Norrie, the last British player remaining in singles, who survived a marathon five-setter against qualifier Nicolas Jarry, winning 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (7), 6-7 (5), 6-3 despite failing to convert a match point earlier.

Elsewhere, No. 5 Taylor Fritz advanced to the quarterfinals after opponent Jordan Thompson retired due to back and leg injuries. Fritz will face No. 17 Karen Khachanov in his quarterfinal matchup.

Alcaraz, who won his fifth Grand Slam title at the French Open last month, has dropped five sets so far at this tournament but has shown remarkable resilience each time, proving that even imperfect performances still keep him in the title hunt.

On the women’s side, No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continued her remarkable consistency at major tournaments, reaching her 11th consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal by defeating No. 24 Elise Mertens 6-4, 7-6 (4). She’ll meet unseeded German Laura Siegemund, who upset Australian Open champion Madison Keys earlier in the tournament and defeated Solana Sierra 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also advanced, overcoming a controversial missed call due to a disabled electronic line system to defeat Sonay Kartal 7-6 (3), 6-4 and reach her first Wimbledon quarterfinal in nine years. She’ll face 13th-seeded American Amanda Anisimova, who outlasted No. 30 Linda Noskova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Monday’s fourth-round lineup features Novak Djokovic against No. 11 Alex de Minaur, in a long-anticipated matchup after de Minaur was forced to withdraw last year. Also on Centre Court will be Mirra Andreeva vs. Emma Navarro, followed by top-seeded Jannik Sinner against No. 19 Grigor Dimitrov.
