Deep Look: Savannah Guthrie’s Mom Still Missing Amid Kidnapping Fears
TUCSON, Ariz. — Four days after Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in southern Arizona, law enforcement still has no named suspect or person of interest in the suspected abduction.
Authorities have confirmed signs of forced entry at Guthrie’s residence and continue to operate under the belief she was taken against her will. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized that although she has mobility limitations, Nancy Guthrie was mentally sound and unlikely to have left voluntarily.
“Detectives are in constant communication with individuals who may have interacted with Mrs. Guthrie recently,” said the sheriff’s office in a social media update on Wednesday. “Our efforts continue in close coordination with the Guthrie family.”
Several news outlets reported receiving ransom notes on Tuesday, which were turned over to investigators. Though the content and authenticity of the notes have not been disclosed, authorities say they are treating them seriously while refraining from public speculation.
During a press briefing held jointly with the FBI’s Tucson field office, Sheriff Nanos implored the public to share any tips. He reiterated the urgency of locating Guthrie, stressing that she needs daily medication. “We’re still hopeful we find her alive,” he added.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The next day, she failed to show up at church, prompting concern from fellow parishioners. A family member was notified, leading to a search of her home and a 911 call Sunday afternoon.
Evidence collected at the scene includes signs of forced nighttime entry, while Nancy’s cellphone, wallet, and car remained untouched. Law enforcement is also analyzing DNA samples—some results are in, but none have led to a suspect.
According to a source close to the investigation, who spoke under anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case, police are examining neighborhood surveillance footage and scanning license plate data and cellphone tower records.
The disappearance has remained front and center on Today, which for the third day in a row began with coverage of the unfolding investigation. Savannah Guthrie has not appeared on the show since the news broke. NBC confirmed Tuesday that she would not be traveling to Italy to cover the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, choosing instead to remain with her family.
Savannah Guthrie has deep roots in Tucson. Raised there since childhood, she is an alumna of the University of Arizona and once worked at local station KVOA as a reporter and anchor. She has often spoken publicly about her mother’s strength and stability, particularly after the death of her father when Savannah was just 16 years old.
