Deep Look
Crime Scene Declared in Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie
Authorities in Tucson, Arizona, have officially classified the home of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, as a crime scene, amid a widening search for the missing woman. Nancy was last seen Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., and her family reported her missing around noon on Sunday.
During a Monday news conference, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that based on evidence at the scene, it appears Nancy Guthrie did not leave her home voluntarily. He pointed to signs that conflicted with her physical limitations and suggested foul play cannot be ruled out.
“We do in fact have a crime scene,” Nanos said.
“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls.”
While Sheriff Nanos didn’t elaborate on all the details, he noted that Nancy’s limited mobility and other evidence found at the residence led investigators to bring in the department’s homicide team, an unusual step for a missing persons case.
“This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we located just looking at the scene,” he said.
Nancy Guthrie, who has physical ailments but no cognitive issues, is the focus of a multi-agency search that includes drones, K9 units, volunteers, Border Patrol, and specialized search and rescue teams.
Savannah Guthrie Speaks Out and Heads to Arizona

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said via NBC.
“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”
