Deep Look

OWINGS MILLS, Md.World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler showed once again why his name is being mentioned alongside Tiger Woods, rallying from four shots down on Sunday to win the 2025 BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club.

The defining moment came at the par-3 17th hole, considered the most punishing on the course. Scheffler, holding a one-shot lead over Robert MacIntyre, found himself in the rough with a delicate chip. From 82 feet away, his shot landed 60 feet short before rolling perfectly into the cup for birdie. The crowd roared, and the win was all but sealed.

“I just wanted to give myself a good look at par,” Scheffler said. “When it started breaking, it looked better and better. Seeing it drop was special.”

Scheffler closed with a 3-under-par 67, finishing at 15-under 265, two strokes clear of MacIntyre. It was his fifth PGA Tour victory of 2025 and his 18th overall, extending a run that has seen him dominate the sport for more than three years.

MacIntyre’s Missed Chance

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre entered the final round with a four-shot cushion but faltered under pressure. He managed just two birdies in his last 27 holes and carded a closing 73.

“When he pitched that in on 17, it was game over,” MacIntyre admitted. “I’m gutted. Right now, I want to smash up my clubs.”

Despite the disappointment, MacIntyre climbed into the world’s top 10 for the first time, moving to No. 8.

Scheffler’s Season of Dominance

With the victory, Scheffler became the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006-07 to record five or more wins in consecutive PGA Tour seasons. His total now includes 18 career wins, putting him on a historic trajectory.

“This season isn’t over,” Scheffler said. “I’m proud of how I fought, but the work continues at East Lake.”

FedEx Cup Implications

Scheffler leads the FedEx Cup standings heading into the Tour Championship at East Lake, where he will attempt to become the first back-to-back FedEx Cup champion since the series began in 2007.

  • Harry Hall was the lone player to play his way into the top 30 with a late chip-in birdie at the 17th.
  • Rickie Fowler narrowly missed qualifying after bogeys at Nos. 14 and 15 knocked him out of contention.
  • Akshay Bhatia claimed the final berth despite four back-nine bogeys, securing the No. 30 position.

All 30 players will have a mathematical chance at the $10 million first-place prize, but Scheffler enters as the heavy favorite.

Comparisons to Tiger Woods

Scheffler’s latest win once again sparked comparisons to Woods’ dominance. His ability to deliver under pressure, combined with consistency throughout the season, has golf analysts pointing to parallels with Woods’ prime.

“Some moments overshadow pure skill with pure magic,” said one PGA Tour official. “That chip-in at 17 was one of them.”

What Comes Next

The Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta will decide the FedEx Cup and a massive payday for the season’s champion. Scheffler has a chance to further separate himself from the field and add another chapter to his historic run.
