Deep Look

Shohei Ohtani’s Ninth-Inning Blast Ignites Dodgers’ Wild 14-11 Comeback Over Diamondbacks

PHOENIX — Shohei Ohtani delivered yet another iconic moment in Dodger blue, smashing a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the ninth to cap a wild 14-11 comeback win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.

Trailing 11-8 entering the ninth, the Dodgers erupted for six runs, beginning with consecutive RBI doubles from Andy Pages and Kiké Hernández, followed by a game-tying single from Max Muncy. That set the stage for Ohtani, who launched his 12th home run of the season over the pool deck in right field off reliever Ryan Thompson.

“You live for moments like that,” Ohtani said postgame. “I just wanted to give us a shot.”

Dodgers Rally After Early Collapse

The Dodgers initially jumped out to an 8-3 lead by the third inning, chasing Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez after just 2 2/3 innings. But Arizona clawed back.

In the fifth, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. blasted a game-tying grand slam, and in the eighth, Ketel Marte and Randal Grichuk each hit solo shots to give Arizona an 11-8 advantage.

But the Dodgers weren’t finished.

Ohtani Finishes Strong, Dodgers Seal Win

Falling behind 1-2 in the count, Ohtani turned on a pitch from Thompson and sent it deep to right, scoring three and putting L.A. ahead for good. Tanner Scott then pitched a clean ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season.

“Ohtani’s clutch gene is something else,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “He thrives under pressure.”

Diamondbacks Make History—But Fall Short

Despite the loss, Arizona made some history. Gurriel’s grand slam marked the second straight game the D-backs hit a slam, following Gabriel Moreno’s shot on Thursday. It’s just the second time in franchise history they’ve done so in back-to-back games — the last time came in 2011.

Ketel Marte finished with two home runs, and Rodriguez was tagged for nine hits and eight earned runs before being pulled.
