Deep Look
Wembanyama’s Big Night Pushes Spurs to First-Ever 5-0 Season Start in Win Over Heat
The San Antonio Spurs continued their undefeated run to open the 2025-26 NBA season with a 107-101 win over the Miami Heat on Thursday night, led by another dominant performance from second-year sensation Victor Wembanyama.
Wembanyama posted 27 points, 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocked shots, helping the Spurs secure a 5-0 start—the best season-opening stretch in the franchise’s history. Previously, the team had reached 4-0 on three occasions, most recently in 2017, but had never cracked the 5-0 mark until now.
San Antonio’s win removed them from a small club of franchises that had never begun a season with five straight wins, a group that still includes the Miami Heat and Sacramento Kings.
“It’s just the beginning,” said Wembanyama, whose towering presence on both ends of the floor continues to anchor San Antonio’s early-season success. “We’re focused on building something special.”
In a matchup between All-Star big men, Miami’s Bam Adebayo also delivered a standout performance, tallying 31 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. However, the Heat were playing short-handed, missing key rotation players including Tyler Herro (ankle), Norman Powell (groin), Nikola Jovic (bruised hip), and Kasparas Jakucionis (groin).
Despite the absences, Miami made the Spurs work for their win. The Heat exploded out of the gate in the fourth quarter with a 17-1 run over the first 4 minutes and 35 seconds. During that stretch, Wembanyama’s lone contribution on the scoreboard came via a free throw.
Miami outscored San Antonio 29-20 in the final period and briefly took control of the momentum. But the Spurs regrouped and closed the game on an 8-3 run to fend off the Heat’s comeback attempt and preserve their undefeated start.
Rookie Stephon Castle was instrumental in the win, scoring 21 points to go with eight assists and six rebounds. Devin Vassell chipped in 17 points, and the Spurs had six players in total score in double digits—a testament to their growing offensive depth and team chemistry.
“We stuck together,” Castle said postgame. “Every team is going to have a run, especially one as tough as Miami, but we finished strong.”
Wembanyama’s defensive impact continues to reach historic levels. With his five blocks Thursday night, he extended his streak of games with at least one blocked shot to 90, the fourth-longest such streak in NBA history. His ability to alter shots and deter drives is one of the key reasons the Spurs are off to such a strong start.
Late in the game, with 14.6 seconds remaining and the Spurs clinging to their lead, Wembanyama was fouled hard by Miami’s Andrew Wiggins. As he rose from the court, he urged the San Antonio crowd to make noise—though they were already on their feet, sensing the historic moment.
The win also ends Miami’s three-game winning streak. Despite the setback, the Heat showed resilience and grit with a limited roster. Head coach Erik Spoelstra noted the team’s fight but acknowledged the challenge of containing Wembanyama.
“You can game plan for him all you want, but there’s just no one like him,” Spoelstra said.
As the Spurs hit the road for a Sunday matchup against the Phoenix Suns, momentum is clearly on their side. With Wembanyama leading the way and a balanced roster behind him, San Antonio has quickly gone from rebuilding to formidable.
Miami will look to bounce back when they visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.
