Deep Look

In a sharp escalation of diplomatic tensions, President Donald Trump has announced that South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 Summit, which is scheduled to take place at his Trump National Doral golf resort near Miami. Trump also stated that all U.S. payments and subsidies to South Africa would be immediately halted, accusing the country of disrespecting a U.S. official and promoting anti-American behavior.

The announcement follows the United States’ decision to boycott the 2025 G20 summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa — the first G20 gathering hosted on the African continent. Trump refused to send an American delegation, citing what he described as violent persecution of white Afrikaners in South Africa, a claim that has been widely dismissed by South African officials and international observers.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that South Africa refused to transfer G20 hosting responsibilities to a senior U.S. Embassy representative at the end of the summit, calling the act a snub.

“South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida,” Trump wrote. “They are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office issued a formal statement pushing back against Trump’s claims, stating that the handover ceremony occurred at the Foreign Ministry building due to the absence of a U.S. delegation at the summit.

The statement described Trump’s response as “regrettable” and accused him of acting based on “misinformation and distortions.”

Trump’s reasoning for excluding South Africa centers around his ongoing claims that white Afrikaner farmers are being targeted for violence and land seizures. These claims, previously circulated in right-wing media and dismissed by South African authorities, have become a recurring theme in Trump’s rhetoric since returning to office.

The issue of Afrikaners — a white South African minority primarily descended from Dutch, French, and German settlers — has featured heavily in Trump’s second-term immigration and foreign policy agendas. Trump has cast South Africa’s current government as anti-Western, citing its ties with Russia, China, and Iran.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration drastically reduced the annual refugee cap to 7,500, prioritizing white South African applicants. In May, 59 white South Africans were admitted to the U.S. as refugees, part of what the administration calls a protective effort to assist “at-risk communities.” The refugee program, previously suspended by Trump on his first day back in office, has since remained highly restrictive.

Trump’s decision to host the next G20 summit at his private Florida golf resort has also raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, though his administration insists it reflects logistical efficiency and security capabilities. The move adds a personal dimension to Trump’s decision to exclude South Africa, as it ties the diplomatic rift to a summit hosted on his own property.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s leadership continues to dispute Trump’s narrative. Officials argue that Afrikaner communities are not under systemic threat and emphasize that South Africa remains committed to democratic governance and racial equality following the end of apartheid in 1994.

With a population of over 62 million, South Africa is home to approximately 2.7 million Afrikaners. While historically central to the apartheid regime, Afrikaners today are not a monolithic group and include individuals who opposed the system and worked toward reconciliation.

The diplomatic fallout from Trump’s decision remains uncertain. The United States now holds the rotating G20 presidency, granting it considerable influence over summit participation and agenda-setting. Trump’s latest move may set a precedent for politically motivated exclusions and deepen divisions between Western and developing nations within the global forum.

For now, the administration appears firm in its stance.

“South Africa has shown that it does not respect the values the G20 represents,” a senior Trump official said anonymously. “President Trump will not tolerate diplomatic games or ideological hostility aimed at the United States.”

The controversy adds another layer to Trump’s confrontational foreign policy style, where perceived slights can carry lasting consequences, and personal convictions often shape official diplomatic actions.
