Trump Blasts Clooneys Over French Citizenship Move

Deep Look

WASHINGTON, D.C.President Donald Trump has sharply criticized George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, following the announcement that the high-profile couple had acquired French citizenship. The move, approved by French authorities on December 26 and made public earlier this week, drew immediate reaction from the U.S. president on social media.

Trump, posting on Truth Social during New Year’s Eve, used the occasion to launch a multi-pronged attack on the Clooneys—taking aim at their political involvement, public influence, and George Clooney’s acting career.

“Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France,” Trump wrote. He further criticized France, stating it was “in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration,” implying the Clooneys were now part of that troubled system.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot had defended the decision to fast-track the citizenship request, highlighting the Clooneys’ well-documented global philanthropic efforts and humanitarian work.

George Clooney, known as much for his Democratic activism as for his film roles, has long been a target of Republican criticism. In 2024, he published an op-ed in The New York Times urging President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race after a poor debate performance against Trump. Biden dropped out less than two weeks later.

Trump referred to this in his post, mocking Clooney’s political influence: “Remember when Clooney … dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat.”

The “Jamala(K!)” reference appeared to be a jab at Vice President Kamala Harris, and Trump also took shots at Democratic governors Tim Walz and Gavin Newsom, who are seen as key figures in the party’s post-Biden landscape.

The fundraiser Trump mentioned was hosted by Clooney to support Biden’s re-election. Reports from a book written by two journalists claimed Biden failed to recognize Clooney at the event, a detail Trump has often brought up to question Biden’s mental fitness.

In his Truth Social post, Trump went further, belittling Clooney’s Hollywood legacy: “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics.”

George Clooney has long been critical of Trump. In a 2021 interview with the BBC, the actor referred to the former president as a “knucklehead,” recalling a time before Trump’s political career when the two crossed paths.

“He was just this knucklehead,” Clooney said. “He was just a guy, who was chasing girls … that’s all he was.”

The Clooneys’ new citizenship status has made headlines not only for its high-profile nature but also for its political implications. While the French government emphasized their humanitarian work, Trump’s statements suggest he sees the move as politically motivated or symbolic of a broader ideological divide.

This isn’t the first time Trump has taken aim at celebrities with political leanings opposing his. The latest comments fit into a broader narrative of Trump framing Hollywood elites as out of touch with American values, particularly as the 2026 election cycle begins to take shape.

Though no official statement has been made by the Clooneys in response to Trump’s criticism, the latest exchange adds another chapter to the long-running friction between the entertainment world and the political right, one that is likely to continue as both sides dig in for the battles ahead.
