Deep Look: Trump Criticizes Allies Over Strait of Hormuz Mission

President Donald Trump sharply criticized U.S. allies who have declined his calls to help patrol the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as Washington attempts to assemble an international coalition to secure the waterway amid the escalating conflict with Iran.

The narrow maritime passage connecting the Persian Gulf to global markets carries roughly 20% of the world’s traded oil, making it one of the most important energy chokepoints on the planet.

But despite repeated appeals from the White House, no country has yet formally agreed to deploy warships to help escort oil tankers through the strait.

Trump Criticizes Allied Hesitation

Speaking at the White House, Trump expressed frustration that several longtime partners have declined to participate in the proposed naval mission.

“Some are very enthusiastic about it, and some aren’t,” Trump said. “Some are countries that we’ve helped for many, many years.”

The president suggested that countries benefiting from decades of U.S. security support should now be willing to assist Washington in safeguarding global shipping routes.

“We have some countries where we have 45,000 soldiers protecting them,” Trump said. “And when we ask if they have any mine sweepers, they say they’d rather not get involved.”

Trump added that the enthusiasm shown by different allies will factor into how the United States views those relationships in the future.

At the same time, the president insisted that the United States does not necessarily need foreign assistance to secure the strait.

“We don’t need anybody,” Trump said. “We’re the strongest nation in the world. We have the strongest military by far.”

However, he said part of his effort to recruit partners was also meant to gauge how allies respond when Washington seeks help.

France Offers Limited Support

Trump offered a mixed assessment of support from Emmanuel Macron.

During remarks at the White House, he rated Macron’s willingness to cooperate as an “eight out of ten.”

“Not perfect,” Trump said with a shrug, “but it’s France.”

French officials have said they could potentially provide defensive escort missions in the strait, but only after the most intense phase of the war subsides.

Iran Accuses Regional Governments

As diplomatic tensions rise, Iran has also directed criticism toward countries in the region that host U.S. military bases.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused neighboring governments of enabling American strikes against Iran.

Tehran maintains that the Strait of Hormuz remains open but is currently operating under what it calls “special conditions.”

Iran has repeatedly targeted oil tankers and threatened further attacks on shipping in the waterway, which has contributed to rising global energy prices.

Oil Prices Surge

Energy markets have reacted sharply to the escalating conflict.

Oil prices climbed to their highest level since mid-2022, while gasoline prices in the United States have reached their highest point since late 2023.

European governments are now scrambling to address the economic consequences.

Energy ministers from the European Union met Monday to discuss strategies for limiting the impact of rising fuel costs.

Israel Expands Operations in Lebanon

Meanwhile, the regional conflict continues to widen.

Israel announced it had expanded “limited” ground operations in southern Lebanon as part of its campaign against Hezbollah.

The Israeli military said the operations are targeted and focused on militant positions near the border.

The fighting has forced the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents from southern Lebanon, according to officials.

Kharg Island Remains Strategic Target

At the same time, Trump reiterated that the United States has already carried out major strikes against military infrastructure on Kharg Island.

The island handles roughly 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports, making it a central pillar of the country’s economy.

Trump said U.S. forces destroyed much of the island’s military infrastructure but deliberately avoided striking the oil facilities themselves.

“We left the pipes,” he said, referring to the oil pipelines and export systems.

However, the president warned that could change if the conflict escalates.

“We can do that on five minutes’ notice,” Trump said. “We avoided it for now, but it may not stay that way.”

Growing Global Stakes

As tensions deepen across the Middle East, the battle over the Strait of Hormuz has become a defining geopolitical issue.

The conflict now touches energy markets, global trade, and military alliances — raising fears that continued escalation could destabilize both regional security and the global economy.

For now, the United States continues to push allies to join a coalition protecting tanker traffic, even as many governments remain cautious about becoming directly involved in a widening war.
