Deep Look: Trump Dominates Republican Congressional Primaries Despite Not Being on Ballot

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump may not appear on the ballot this year, but his influence is shaping Republican congressional primaries across the country, with candidates increasingly centering their campaigns on loyalty to the former president.

Despite declining approval ratings tied to rising gas prices and economic concerns, Trump remains one of the most powerful figures in Republican politics. His endorsement is highly sought after by GOP candidates, while the possibility of his opposition continues to influence campaign strategies.

Massie Race Highlights Trump’s Influence

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, one of Trump’s top primary targets, has launched advertising emphasizing his alignment with the president.

In one campaign ad, Massie says he agrees with Trump “nearly all of the time” and highlights their past mutual endorsements.

“It’s why in the past I’ve endorsed him, and he’s endorsed me,” Massie says in the ad.
He also emphasizes his independence, adding that he is “one of the few Republicans in Washington who stands up to every president, including President Trump” on federal spending.

Massie’s campaign also attacked Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein, criticizing his past registration as an independent during Trump’s first term.

The ad labels Gallrein “not just a Trump hater, a Trump traitor.”

Trump-Backed Candidates Lean Into Endorsements

Gallrein and outside groups supporting him have responded by heavily promoting Trump’s endorsement in campaign messaging.

One 15-second advertisement titled “Handpicked” focuses entirely on Trump’s backing, quoting a news anchor describing Gallrein as the president’s “handpicked choice” for the congressional seat.

The approach underscores how candidates are relying on Trump’s influence to boost credibility with Republican voters.

Other GOP Primaries Follow Similar Pattern

Rep. Dave Joyce of Ohio, facing a conservative primary challenge, is also highlighting his ties to Trump.

Joyce’s ad titled “Stands with Trump” emphasizes that he has Trump’s “complete and total endorsement for reelection” and urges voters to “stand with President Trump” by supporting his campaign.

Several candidates in open House races are also leaning heavily on their association with Trump, including:

Trump’s Continued Political Power

Even with economic concerns weighing on Trump’s approval ratings, his role as a kingmaker within the Republican Party remains strong.

Candidates across the country are tailoring their campaigns to highlight Trump loyalty, signaling that his influence continues to shape GOP politics ahead of the upcoming elections.

The trend suggests that Trump’s political presence remains dominant — even when he is not on the ballot — as Republican candidates compete for his endorsement and support.
