Deep Look: Trump-Endorsed Clay Fuller Wins Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Former Seat

RINGGOLD, Georgia — Republican Clay Fuller won the special election for Marjorie Taylor Greene’s former House seat Tuesday, defeating Democratic challenger Shawn Harris and reinforcing the GOP’s slim majority in Congress.

Fuller’s victory came in Georgia’s heavily Republican 14th Congressional District, where Greene had previously won by 29 percentage points and former President Donald Trump carried the district by nearly 37 points. With nearly all ballots counted, Fuller led Harris by roughly 12 percentage points.

The result provides Republicans with an important boost in the House, where the GOP holds a narrow majority and every seat is critical.

Trump Endorsement Plays Key Role

Fuller credited Trump’s endorsement for helping secure the victory. Speaking to supporters in Ringgold, Fuller said the election demonstrated Trump’s continued political influence.

“They couldn’t beat Donald Trump and they never will,” Fuller told supporters. “And I will be on Capitol Hill as a warrior to have his back each and every day.”

Trump had endorsed Fuller earlier this year after Greene’s resignation triggered the special election. The endorsement helped Fuller stand out in a crowded Republican field.

Trump also repeated his support in the final hours before voting, urging supporters to turn out for Fuller.

Iran War Concerns Influence Voters

The election unfolded amid rising tensions over the conflict with Iran, which appeared to influence some voters.

Trump had set a Tuesday evening deadline for Iran negotiations, warning that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if no deal was reached. He later backed off the threat, announcing a two-week ceasefire.

Some voters expressed concern about the escalation.

Acworth resident Jason McGinty said he worried Trump might go too far but still supported Fuller to maintain “America First” leadership.

Retiree Judy McDonald supported Trump’s decision to confront Iran but said she felt anxious about the conflict.

“Eventually we will have peace,” she said, adding that she believed Iran would eventually be forced to change course.

Democrats Show Stronger-Than-Expected Performance

Despite the Republican win, Democrats pointed to Harris’ performance as a sign of growing momentum.

Harris, a retired Army brigadier general and cattle farmer, drew national attention and significant fundraising support.

Some Democratic voters said they hoped the election would send a message to Trump.

Retiree Melinda Dorl said she supported Harris to show dissatisfaction with the administration’s policies.

Others, including independent voters, also backed Harris despite the district’s conservative lean.

Michael Robards, a center-right independent, said he voted for Harris to push back against Trump’s policies.

Fuller Strengthens GOP Majority

Fuller will serve the remainder of Greene’s term, bolstering Republicans’ narrow advantage in the House.

Republicans currently hold 217 seats to Democrats’ 214, with one independent.

However, Fuller will still need to win another election to secure a full two-year term. A Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, with a possible runoff in June. Harris is already set to be the Democratic nominee in November.

Greene’s Departure Set Stage

Greene resigned after publicly criticizing Trump’s foreign policy and handling of issues including the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Trump later backed a primary challenger, and Greene announced her resignation shortly afterward.

Since leaving Congress, Greene has continued criticizing Trump, particularly over the Iran conflict.

“Trump was elected to end foreign wars,” Greene wrote on social media, criticizing the administration’s military approach.

High-Stakes Election Year Ahead

The Georgia race adds to a series of special elections where Democrats have performed better than expected, even in Republican-leaning districts.

Meanwhile, Democrats also secured a win in a Wisconsin Supreme Court race Tuesday, expanding the liberal majority there.

With midterm elections approaching, both parties are watching these results closely for signs of voter sentiment.

For now, Fuller’s victory helps Republicans maintain their narrow hold on the House — but the competitive showing suggests more closely watched races ahead.
