Deep Look

Trump Faces MAGA Uprising as Epstein Probe Sparks New Divide Among His Supporters

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is confronting a growing rebellion within his MAGA base over his administration’s handling of documents tied to the Jeffrey Epstein criminal investigation—a controversy that threatens to derail his political momentum and complicate his messaging ahead of the crucial 2026 midterms.

The furor erupted in recent days as prominent figures on the right voiced frustration that Trump’s Department of Justice has refused to release additional Epstein-related files, citing legal restrictions and the protection of victims.

“I don’t think that just putting out a Truth Social post is going to make this issue go away,” said MAGA activist and influencer Laura Loomer in an interview with POLITICO.

Truth Social Posts Fail to Quell Anger

Trump has attempted twice in two days to contain the outrage, first posting on Truth Social that he didn’t “like what’s happening” among his supporters. He also publicly defended Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has become a lightning rod for MAGA anger over the secrecy surrounding the Epstein files.

Speaking to reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews on Sunday, Trump insisted that Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino—a figure also enmeshed in the controversy—remained in “good shape” despite reports of internal clashes at the FBI.

“He’s a very good guy… He sounded terrific, actually,” Trump said about Bongino, who reportedly skipped work Friday amid escalating tensions.

Bondi vs. Bongino — DOJ Turmoil

According to several news outlets, Bondi and Bongino have privately butted heads over how much Epstein material should be made public. MAGA-aligned attorney and frequent Oval Office visitor Mike Davis defended Bondi, stating that the Justice Department was trying to be transparent but was constrained by legal hurdles.

“This is a case of no good deed going unpunished,” Davis said, explaining that grand jury materials, sealed court documents, child pornography evidence, and unsubstantiated claims make blanket disclosure impossible.

The White House has declined to comment publicly on the internal drama.

Epstein Conspiracies Drive MAGA Split

The dispute has exposed one of the biggest rifts within Trump’s MAGA movement since he returned to office. On one side are loyalists demanding full transparency, many of whom believe Epstein was murdered in prison and possessed a secret list of high-profile clients. On the other side stands Trump’s own DOJ and FBI, which recently declared there’s no evidence to support those conspiracy theories.

Last week, Axios reported that Trump’s DOJ and FBI had concluded there was no Epstein “client list” nor any credible evidence Epstein was murdered, directly contradicting years of speculation fueled by conservative influencers, including Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel.

MAGA Voices Demand Action

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson outlined a four-step plan on social media, urging Trump to hold a press conference and even call former President Bill Clinton for questioning regarding Epstein ties.

Meanwhile, Loomer, who maintains connections with figures ranging from Vice President JD Vance to Trump himself, remains unconvinced that the White House response has been adequate.

“It’s kind of had a Streisand effect,” Loomer said of Trump’s Truth Social posts. “People are focusing on this topic a lot more than they were before he posted.”

She advocates for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate the handling of Epstein’s files, suggesting it could reassure the MAGA base and potentially remove the issue from Bondi’s jurisdiction.

“I don’t think that she has been transparent or done a good job handling this issue,” Loomer said.

A Distraction Ahead of Midterms

Loomer warned that the controversy risks overshadowing key issues Trump needs to highlight ahead of 2026, including the economy and immigration.

“We have the midterm elections coming up, and I agree that we can’t allow for one issue to dominate the entire news cycle,” Loomer said. “President Trump, as the leader of the free world, can’t allow for his entire administration to be fully consumed with a single issue.”

The DOJ’s Limited Release

In February, the Justice Department released what it called the “first phase” of Epstein-related documents, many connected to court cases in which prominent figures, including Trump and Bill Clinton, are named. However, neither Trump nor Clinton has been accused of wrongdoing related to Epstein’s criminal activities.

While MAGA figures clamor for more information, DOJ officials insist their hands are tied. They cite strict federal laws governing grand jury secrecy and victim protection, alongside the presence of sensitive material, including child exploitation evidence.

The Road Ahead

As Trump’s allies struggle to craft a unified message, the Epstein controversy threatens to fracture his coalition at a politically delicate moment. With the midterms looming, Republican strategists fear the scandal could siphon energy away from legislative wins Trump had hoped to tout on the campaign trail.

For now, the president faces a stark choice: risk alienating his fervent base by maintaining secrecy—or embrace calls for radical transparency, potentially unleashing new waves of speculation and political fallout.
