Trump Fires Mount As White House Loyalty Tightens

Deep Look

The second term of President Donald Trump may lack the high-profile drama of his earlier presidency, but behind the scenes, a sweeping loyalty purge is underway. Over a dozen senior officials across federal agencies have been dismissed or had promotions blocked within the first six months — many due to allegations of disloyalty promoted by right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

Unlike in his first term, Trump has leaned heavily on external influencers and informal networks to shape personnel decisions. At the center of this dynamic is Loomer, a far-right firebrand who has become a self-appointed loyalty enforcer, openly boasting of her direct line to the West Wing and her role in staffing decisions.

“My tip line has come to serve as a form of therapy for Trump officials who want to expose their colleagues,” Loomer told POLITICO.

Internal Chaos, External Influence

Sources within the administration describe an atmosphere charged with suspicion. Staffers fear being reported for minor ideological discrepancies or associations with prior administrations. According to a presidential ally, Trump’s tolerance for dissent has dropped to “zero.”

From the Pentagon to the National Security Council (NSC), the purge has swept through multiple agencies. The firings often coincide with posts from Loomer on X (formerly Twitter), who openly claims credit for getting certain individuals fired.

Notably:

  • Terry Adirim, a former CIA medical director, was terminated after Loomer spotlighted her role in military COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
  • Vinay Prasad, the FDA’s top vaccine official, was fired following Loomer’s online campaign labeling him a “progressive saboteur.”
  • April Doss, top lawyer at the NSA, was ousted after conservative media pressure amplified by Loomer.

Political Fallout and Internal Defenses

While critics see Loomer’s sway as unprecedented and dangerous, the Trump White House is standing firm. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised the reshaped administration:

“President Trump has put together the best Cabinet and staff in history.”

Kush Desai, another White House spokesperson, justified the dismissals as necessary for achieving the “America First” agenda.

“It is critical to recruit the most experienced staffers aligned with President Trump’s vision.”

Meanwhile, Loomer continues to cultivate influence, claiming she maintains contacts across federal agencies, from Homeland Security to Health and Human Services, and says she gets along “very well” with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles — a key gatekeeper in the administration.

In a stunning example of her reach, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll canceled an agreement with Jen Easterly, former head of Biden’s cyber defense agency, hours after Loomer condemned Easterly’s appointment online.

Inside the White House

Unlike previous chiefs of staff who tried to restrict Trump’s access to informal influencers, Wiles has taken a hands-off approach. Trump routinely refers to her in meetings as “the most powerful woman in the world,” and she allows outside voices — including Loomer’s — to reach the president without restriction.

Kevin Carroll, a former CIA officer representing fired intelligence staffers, criticized Loomer’s power:

“This is a dangerous situation with someone outside the government having de facto hiring and firing power.”

Some recent staffing decisions include:

  • Withdrawal of Brian Quintenz’s nomination to head the Commodity Futures Trading Commission after cryptocurrency moguls Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss complained.
  • Removal of Janette Nesheiwat as surgeon general nominee after Loomer called her “ideologically misaligned.”
  • Firing of six NSC officials, including Brian Walsh and Maggie Dougherty, just after Loomer met with Trump.
  • Removal of Gen. Timothy Haugh, head of the NSA and Cyber Command, despite bipartisan support.

“Enemies and Jealousy”

Loomer is unapologetic about her role.

“There are people in the White House infected with professional jealousy,” she said. “They dislike people who might be better at their job.”

Critics say Loomer’s growing role threatens the professionalism and impartiality of the federal government. Her critics point out her lack of experience in national security or law enforcement, while supporters hail her as a much-needed watchdog ensuring ideological purity.

Her impact may extend beyond the White House. In recent weeks, federal prosecutors like Adam Schleifer and Maurene Comey — both involved in major criminal cases — were also dismissed, reportedly after Loomer intervened.

While many of these firings remain officially unexplained, the timing and coordination with Loomer’s statements suggest a consistent pattern: in Trump’s Washington, loyalty is king, and those who fall short — or fail to win Loomer’s approval — are shown the door.
