Trump Hails Supreme Court Win on Nationwide Injunctions
Deep Look
Supreme Court Ruling a “Giant Win,” Trump Says
Speaking from the White House briefing room, President Donald Trump declared the ruling a significant victory for his second-term agenda.
“Thanks to this decision, we can now probably file to proceed with these numerous policies and those that have been wrongly enjoined on a nationwide basis,” Trump said.
Among the policies Trump wants to advance are ending birthright citizenship, cutting federal funding for sanctuary cities, suspending refugee resettlement, halting taxpayer funding for transgender surgeries, and freezing other federal spending programs.
“We have so many of them. I have a whole list,” the president added.
Supreme Court Curbs Nationwide Injunctions
The Supreme Court ruling, delivered in a 6-3 decision, addressed the scope of federal courts’ power to impose universal injunctions that block presidential actions nationwide. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, writing for the majority, concluded that such sweeping injunctions exceed traditional judicial authority unless explicitly authorized by Congress.
“Justice Barrett correctly holds that the district court lacks authority to enter nationwide or universal injunctions,” Trump noted, praising Barrett’s opinion as “brilliantly written.”
Trump Administration Confident on Birthright Citizenship
Although the Court stopped short of ruling on the merits of Trump’s executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed strong confidence in the administration’s legal position.
“Birthright citizenship will be decided in October, in the next session by the Supreme Court,” Bondi said. “We’re very confident in the Supreme Court. But again, it’s pending litigation, and that will directly be determined in October.”
Bondi called Friday’s ruling a “huge win.”
Barrett Earns Public Praise From Trump Amid Private Frustration
Trump’s public praise for Justice Barrett came despite reports that he has privately complained about some rulings from justices he appointed during his first term.
“I just have great respect for her. I always have. And her decision was brilliantly written today—from all accounts,” Trump said, thanking Barrett as well as Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Thomas for supporting the ruling.
How the Supreme Court Ruling Impacts Trump’s Agenda
Legal experts say the ruling will make it more challenging for opponents of Trump’s policies to obtain nationwide injunctions that halt new executive actions. However, states could still seek broader relief in specific cases, like Trump’s controversial effort to end birthright citizenship, which critics argue could encourage cross-border births in states like New Jersey to secure U.S. citizenship.
“It won’t be impossible to block policies, but it will prove more difficult,” CNN’s John Fritze reported.
With nationwide injunctions now harder to secure, Trump’s administration expects fewer legal roadblocks for other initiatives, ranging from trade policies to stricter immigration enforcement.
Trump called the decision a “victory for the Constitution, the separation of powers, and the rule of law.”
“Big one, wasn’t it? This was a big decision,” the president said, declaring the Supreme Court ruling an “amazing decision, one that we’re very happy about.”
