Deep Look: Trump Declared in ‘Exceptional Health’ After Medical Checkup at Walter Reed

WASHINGTON, D.C. President Donald Trump was given a clean bill of health Friday after undergoing a comprehensive medical checkup at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, according to a memo from his personal physician. The visit, which included lab tests, imaging scans, and vaccine boosters, comes as Trump prepares for back-to-back international trips to the Middle East and Asia.

In a one-page statement released by the White House, Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician, described Trump’s overall health as “exceptional,” noting excellent cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical function.

“President Donald J. Trump remains in exceptional health,” Barbabella wrote, adding that the evaluation was part of an “ongoing health maintenance plan.”

What the Medical Exam Included

Trump spent approximately three hours at the Bethesda, Maryland facility, receiving what was officially described as a “scheduled follow-up evaluation.” According to Barbabella, the exam featured:

  • Advanced imaging
  • Routine lab testing
  • Preventive health assessments
  • Cardiac age analysis
  • Flu vaccination
  • COVID-19 booster shot

Of particular interest was Trump’s cardiac age, calculated to be 14 years younger than his actual age of 79, suggesting a lower-than-average risk for heart disease. The doctor did not specify the methodology used, but such evaluations typically consider blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and lifestyle factors.

Physical Fitness Amid Political Scrutiny

Though Trump is the oldest president to take office, his health record has consistently been used by both supporters and critics to gauge his fitness for leadership. According to the April 2025 physical, Trump had lost 20 pounds since a previous exam in June 2020, attributing the improvement to an “active lifestyle.”

That exam also included mental health screenings, which Trump reportedly passed. Friday’s visit appears to have included updated neurological testing, though specific cognitive assessments were not disclosed in the summary.

The White House confirmed the latest checkup was also part of preparation for foreign travel, including stops in the Middle East this weekend and Asia later this month for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

July Health Concern Addressed

The update follows a July 2025 health disclosure, where Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in older adults where blood pools in the legs due to weakened valves. At the time, Trump had been spotted with bruising on his hands, prompting public speculation about his condition.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the administration disclosed the condition to “dispel rumors” and reinforce its commitment to transparency.

Health as a Political Weapon

Health has been a recurring theme in Trump’s political rhetoric, often used as a point of contrast between himself and Democratic rivals. Trump frequently questioned President Joe Biden’s mental and physical fitness, pointing out that he has undergone cognitive testing, while Biden had not.

Those criticisms intensified following Biden’s disastrous 2024 debate performance, after which the former president dropped out of the re-election race. Trump has since leaned heavily into the narrative that he remains “mentally sharp” and “physically capable” to lead the country once again.

Despite political posturing, presidential health disclosures are largely voluntary, with each administration choosing how much to share. Trump’s current health releases include details on:

  • Weight and body mass index
  • Cholesterol levels
  • Blood pressure
  • Past surgeries and conditions
  • Mental and neurological screening results

What’s Next

While no further medical visits have been scheduled publicly, Barbabella stated that the president would continue to follow a preventive care plan and that ongoing evaluations would be a part of that regimen.

The White House emphasized that Friday’s evaluation was not the result of any acute medical issue, but rather part of long-term health planning to ensure readiness ahead of significant international engagements.

As Trump prepares to represent the U.S. abroad, administration officials say the president is “fully fit and capable” of meeting the demands of his office, both diplomatically and domestically.
