Deep Look: Trump Says Iran Made ‘Significant’ Proposal But Not Enough

President Donald Trump revealed Monday that Iran has made what he described as a “significant proposal” following his ultimatum demanding Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though he emphasized the offer was still insufficient.

Speaking to reporters during the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, Trump said negotiations between the United States and Iran were ongoing but warned that military pressure would continue if Tehran fails to meet U.S. demands.

“They made a proposal, and it’s a significant proposal, a significant step,” Trump told reporters. “It’s not good enough, but it’s a very significant step. They are negotiating now. And they have made a very significant step. We’ll see what happens.”

Trump’s comments came as tensions remain high following his warning that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil shipping route — or face U.S. strikes targeting key infrastructure, including power plants and bridges.

Rescue of Downed Airmen

Trump also previewed details of a planned White House briefing regarding the rescue of two U.S. aviators whose F-15E jet was shot down behind Iranian lines. He said both airmen were recovering and described the incident as rare given the scale of U.S. operations.

“When you do thousands and thousands of flights, and you have one plane shot down — and not mortally — the two pilots got out,” Trump said. “They got a little bit lucky.”

The president added that Iran was also fortunate in managing to shoot down the aircraft.

Trump said additional details about the rescue operation would be released during a later news conference.

Trump Issues Stark Warnings

Despite acknowledging diplomatic progress, Trump continued issuing warnings toward Tehran, saying Iran faces severe consequences if negotiations fail.

“We are obliterating that country, and I hate to do it, but we’re obliterating,” Trump said. “They don’t want to say uncle, but they will.”

Trump threatened that Iran could lose critical infrastructure if it refuses to comply.

“If they don’t, they’ll have no bridges, they’ll have no power plants. They’ll have no anything,” he said, adding that other potential actions could be even more severe.

Oil and Strategic Control Comments

Trump also floated the idea of taking control of Iran’s oil resources, saying such a move could benefit both the United States and Iranian citizens.

“If I had my choice, I’d take the oil, because it’s there for the taking,” Trump said. “I’d make plenty of money, and I’d also take care of the people of Iran much better.”

However, Trump acknowledged that American public sentiment favors ending overseas conflicts and bringing U.S. forces home.

He suggested that any future arrangement could resemble U.S. policy toward Venezuela, including restrictions tied to nuclear ambitions and broader political changes.

Negotiations Continue

Trump emphasized that multiple options remain on the table, including military, diplomatic, and economic strategies.

“Hopefully it could be over with quickly,” Trump said. “There are lots of different alternatives. We have many alternatives.”

He added that the United States could withdraw immediately but warned that Iran would take years to rebuild from current damage.

“We could leave right now, and it would take them 15 years to rebuild what they have,” Trump said. “But I want to finish it up.”

Trump’s remarks came as negotiations continue under mounting global pressure to avoid further escalation, particularly given the importance of the Strait of Hormuz to global energy markets.

The coming days are expected to determine whether diplomacy succeeds or tensions escalate further in the region.
