Trump’s Attendance Prompts Major Security Operation

President Donald Trump’s planned appearance at Game 3 of the NBA Finals has triggered one of the most extensive security operations seen around Madison Square Garden in years.

The president confirmed Friday that he would attend Monday night’s matchup between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. The game marks the first NBA Finals contest played in New York since 1999 and has already generated extraordinary excitement throughout the city.

Trump, a longtime Knicks supporter, has made appearances at several high-profile sporting events during his second term, including the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, and Ryder Cup.

His attendance at Game 3, however, has added another layer of complexity to an already historic event.

Outdoor Watch Party Canceled

One of the biggest changes resulting from the presidential visit is the cancellation of the official outdoor watch party outside Madison Square Garden.

The New York Police Department announced Sunday that the decision was reached in coordination with the U.S. Secret Service.

“There will be no watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Game 3 only,” the NYPD said in a statement. “This was done fully in coordination with the Secret Service because of the presidential visit. We expect watch parties at Madison Square Garden to resume for Game 4.”

The outdoor events had become a popular gathering point during the Knicks’ playoff run, drawing thousands of passionate fans eager to celebrate together even without tickets to the game.

Watch Parties Had Already Raised Concerns

Even before Trump’s visit was announced, city officials had concerns about the large gatherings outside the arena.

Following the Knicks’ victory over San Antonio in Game 2, crowds spilled into surrounding streets and led to multiple arrests.

According to police, more than two dozen individuals were arrested after unofficial celebrations became unruly. Authorities said one woman was accused of punching a police officer during the disturbances.

Ahead of the NBA Finals, officials initially considered eliminating outdoor watch parties altogether due to safety concerns. The city later reversed course and approved a permit for Game 1 festivities.

The presidential visit ultimately tipped the balance in favor of canceling the Game 3 gathering.

Secret Service Explains Decision

Federal security officials emphasized that public safety was the primary consideration.

Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s New York Field Office, acknowledged that fans would be disappointed by the cancellation.

“At the same time, our responsibility is to ensure the highest level of public safety,” McCool said.

“After careful coordination and assessment, the Secret Service and the NYPD jointly determined that outdoor watch parties could not be accommodated in the immediate vicinity of Madison Square Garden due to the security requirements associated with an event of this scale and the need to maintain a secure environment for protective operations.”

Fans Face Airport-Style Screening

Those fortunate enough to have tickets for Game 3 will encounter significantly tighter security procedures than usual.

The Knicks organization has instructed attendees to arrive at least two hours before tipoff to avoid delays entering the arena.

Security measures include:

  • TSA-style security screening
  • Expanded security checkpoints
  • Strict no-bag policy
  • Enhanced credential verification
  • Additional law enforcement presence

Officials warned that prohibited items brought to the arena will not be stored at Madison Square Garden.

Instead, fans are encouraged to travel light and review security guidelines before arriving.

Alternative Watch Parties Remain Available

Although the Madison Square Garden outdoor event has been canceled, the Knicks organization has arranged alternative locations for fans.

Official team-sanctioned watch parties are scheduled at:

  • Wollman Rink in Central Park
  • Brooklyn Bowl

However, both venues reached capacity through advance registration before Sunday afternoon.

As a result, many fans will gather in sports bars, restaurants, and private viewing events across New York City to watch the highly anticipated game.

Historic Stakes Add To Excitement

The security operation comes as excitement surrounding the Knicks continues to build.

New York enters Game 3 with a 2-0 lead over the Spurs and is only two wins away from capturing its first NBA championship since 1973.

Ticket demand has surged to record levels, with resale prices among the highest seen for any sporting event in recent years.

The combination of championship stakes, a presidential appearance, and unprecedented fan enthusiasm has transformed Monday night’s game into one of the most closely watched events in New York sports history.

Security And Celebration Collide

While the cancellation of the outdoor watch party disappointed many fans, officials insist the measures are necessary given the scale of the event.

With thousands expected to converge on the area surrounding Madison Square Garden and the added security requirements associated with a presidential visit, law enforcement agencies are prioritizing crowd management and safety.

For Knicks fans, the focus ultimately remains on the court, where New York has an opportunity to move one step closer to ending a championship drought that has lasted more than five decades.
