Frontier Plane Hits Pedestrian During Takeoff
A Frontier Airlines flight struck and killed a pedestrian Friday night while taking off from Denver International Airport, triggering an emergency response and forcing passengers to evacuate the aircraft on the runway.
Airport officials said the incident occurred at approximately 11:19 p.m. as Frontier Flight 4345 prepared to depart for Los Angeles International Airport.
According to airport authorities, the unidentified pedestrian had jumped a perimeter fence and entered the airfield only minutes before the collision.
The airport said the person was not believed to be an employee.
“The plane reported striking a pedestrian during takeoff at DEN at approximately 11:19 p.m. on Friday,” airport officials said in a statement.
The pedestrian died at the scene.
Pilot Reported Collision And Possible Engine Fire
Audio recordings from air traffic communications captured the immediate confusion and urgency inside the cockpit after the collision.
“We’re stopping on the runway,” the pilot told the control tower. “We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire.”
The pilot later informed controllers that the aircraft carried “231 souls” on board and reported that “an individual was walking across the runway.”
Air traffic controllers quickly dispatched emergency crews after the report.
The pilot then warned that smoke was entering the aircraft cabin and announced plans to evacuate passengers directly on the runway.
“We have smoke in the aircraft. We are going to evacuate on the runway,” the pilot said.
Frontier later stated that smoke was reported inside the cabin after the aborted takeoff, though officials have not confirmed whether the smoke was directly connected to the collision itself.
Passengers Evacuated Using Emergency Slides
Frontier Airlines said the aircraft carried 224 passengers and seven crew members at the time of the incident.
Passengers evacuated using emergency slides before being transported by airport buses back to the terminal.
Airport officials said 12 passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation process, while five individuals were transported to local hospitals for further treatment.
“We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities,” Frontier Airlines said in a statement.
The emergency evacuation created scenes of panic on the runway as first responders rushed toward the aircraft.
Federal Investigation Underway
The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and is expected to lead the investigation into the fatal collision.
Denver International Airport announced that Runway 17L would remain temporarily closed while investigators examine the scene and review evidence.
Authorities are expected to investigate:
- How the pedestrian accessed the airfield
- Airport perimeter security procedures
- Aircraft damage and engine conditions
- The source of reported cabin smoke
- Emergency evacuation procedures
Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim or explained why the person entered the runway area.
Incident Follows Another Airport Workplace Death
The Denver tragedy came just one day after another fatal aviation-related incident at Orlando International Airport.
Delta Air Lines confirmed Thursday that one of its employees was killed while working at the Orlando airport.
The airline did not release details surrounding that death but said it was cooperating with investigators.
“We are focused on extending our full support to family and taking care of our Orlando team during this difficult time,” Delta said in a statement.
The back-to-back airport fatalities are likely to increase scrutiny on aviation safety procedures, airport security systems and emergency response protocols nationwide.
