Deep Look: Purdy Throws Five Touchdowns as 49ers Roll Past Colts for Fifth Straight Win
The San Francisco 49ers are heating up at the perfect time. On Monday night, quarterback Brock Purdy threw a career-high five touchdown passes and led the 49ers to a commanding 48-27 win over the Indianapolis Colts, extending San Francisco’s win streak to five games.
The performance came just one day after the 49ers clinched a playoff berth. With their 11th win of the season, they remain in the hunt for the NFC West title and potentially the top seed in the conference.
“He was awesome, he played really well,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said. “Pretty close to a perfect game.”
Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 295 yards, finding five different targets in the end zone. The 49ers’ offense was nearly unstoppable, totaling 440 yards and going a second straight week without punting.
Christian McCaffrey played a key role, rushing 21 times for 117 yards and catching six passes for 29 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end George Kittle contributed with seven receptions for 115 yards and a score, continuing his dominance late in the season.
San Francisco’s lone turnover was a Purdy interception, but outside of that mistake, the offense dictated the pace against a Colts defense that looked overmatched.
Meanwhile, Philip Rivers, returning for his second game after a five-year layoff, put up solid numbers — 23 of 35 for 277 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. But he couldn’t prevent the Colts (8-7) from suffering their fifth straight loss and potentially falling out of playoff contention.
Rivers started hot, connecting with Alec Pierce for a 20-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Pierce finished the night with four catches, 86 yards, and two touchdowns. The Colts quickly lost momentum as Purdy answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson, then capitalized on a Colts turnover with a short TD pass to McCaffrey to take a 14-7 lead.
Rivers responded by tying the game with a 16-yard strike to Pierce, but Purdy hit back with an 11-yard touchdown to Kittle, followed by exchanged field goals to give San Francisco a 24-17 halftime lead. Colts kicker Eddy Pineiro’s 64-yard attempt hit the crossbar as the half expired.
San Francisco continued its dominance in the second half. Purdy connected with Jauan Jennings for a 15-yard touchdown on the first drive of the third quarter. After Jonathan Taylor scored from a yard out to cut the lead to 34-27, Purdy delivered another scoring strike to McCaffrey with 7:37 remaining.
The final blow came from rookie linebacker Dee Winters, who returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown, sealing the win.
“This was a big one,” Purdy said. “We executed all game, and I’m proud of how the team came together tonight.”
