Melania Trump’s Documentary Premieres at Kennedy Center Ahead of Global Release

WASHINGTON — Melania Trump has taken an unconventional step as first lady by producing a documentary about her experience during the 20 days leading up to her husband Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration. The nearly two-hour film, titled Melania, premiered Thursday night at the Kennedy Center and is set for a worldwide theatrical release on Friday.

The film was created in collaboration with AmazonMGM Studios and directed by Brett Ratner, marking his return to filmmaking after a hiatus following #MeToo-era allegations. The production reportedly cost $40 million and will eventually be available for streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

In Melania, the first lady offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at her life as she prepares to return to the White House. The idea, she says, came after her husband’s re-election in 2024. The documentary attempts to capture the personal and political pressures faced by an incoming first lady.

“For the first time in history, people will witness the 20 days leading up to the inauguration through the eyes of an incoming first lady,” Trump stated during a public appearance at the New York Stock Exchange.

Known for maintaining her privacy, Melania’s reserved public image has often kept her at a distance from the American public. In the trailer for the documentary, she is seen on Inauguration Day, inside the Capitol building, glancing into the camera and saying,

“Here we go again.” The moment underscores both familiarity and hesitation as she steps back into the national spotlight.

Public opinion on Melania Trump remains divided. A 2025 CNN poll showed that about 3 in 10 Americans held a favorable view of her, while a similar number saw her unfavorably. A significant 4 in 10 either had no opinion or hadn’t heard enough about her to judge. Among Republicans, her favorability was much higher, with 7 in 10 viewing her positively.

According to historians and political experts, the documentary could be a strategic move to influence how Americans perceive her.

Katherine Sibley, a professor at Saint Joseph’s University, noted, “It’s an attempt to refine her image. She’s still a mystery to many Americans.”

As first lady, Melania Trump has embraced traditional roles such as hosting state events and holiday celebrations, but she has also carved out policy areas of her own. One of her key achievements in the second term was pushing for the passage of the “Take It Down Act,” federal legislation criminalizing the non-consensual publication of intimate images. The president signed the law and had Melania co-sign the bill.

Her foster care advocacy, which began with the “Be Best” initiative, has expanded globally under the “Fostering the Future” program, formalized by executive order. She also played a unique diplomatic role in 2025, personally writing to Russian President Vladimir Putin to request help reuniting children with their families amid the Ukraine conflict. Eight children were later reunited, following the delivery of her letter by President Trump during a meeting with Putin in Alaska.

Melania has also engaged in visits to disaster-stricken areas, contributed to shaping the administration’s stance on artificial intelligence and education, and teased a new legislative initiative for 2026, though details have not yet been made public.

The nature of the documentary, however, raises ethical questions. First ladies traditionally avoid commercial ventures to sidestep conflicts of interest while living in the White House. Melania’s film represents a departure from that norm.

“She may be the first first lady to be compensated significantly for a documentary while in office,” said Katherine Jellison, professor emerita at Ohio University. “But it’s in keeping with how the Trumps operate — breaking precedent is part of their brand.”

Financial details surrounding the production remain undisclosed. Amazon declined to comment on the agreement or profit-sharing, though the film’s extensive promotional strategy — including red carpet premieres and a nationwide simulcast — signals high expectations.

Melania also serves as a professional comeback for director Brett Ratner, who has faced multiple allegations of misconduct. Though his attorney has denied the accusations, Ratner has been absent from major Hollywood projects for years. His partnership with the Trump family adds another layer of complexity to the film’s rollout.

Filming began in December 2024, and the production includes intimate family moments, behind-the-scenes campaign flashbacks, and footage of the logistical and emotional journey back to the White House.

The question now is whether Melania can reshape the former model’s public image or will be viewed as another high-profile branding effort from the Trump family. Either way, the film’s ambitious release and production value suggest it is meant to have a lasting impact — on her legacy and the American cultural landscape.
