Deep Look: JD Vance Announces Faith-Focused Book “Communion” Ahead of Possible 2028 Run

Vice President JD Vance is set to release a new book this spring exploring his religious faith, personal transformation and conversion to Catholicism — a move that is already fueling speculation about a potential presidential bid in 2028.

The book, titled “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” will be published June 16 by HarperCollins imprint Harper, the same publisher behind Vance’s bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy.”

In a statement announcing the release, Vance described the book as a personal reflection on losing and rediscovering faith.

“The story of how I regained my faith, of course, only happened because I had lost it to begin with,” Vance said.

He added that the book explores deeper questions about why his early Christian upbringing did not fully take root during his youth.

“The interesting question that hangs over this book … is why I ever strayed from the path,” Vance wrote.

Religious Journey From Atheism to Catholicism

Vance’s new memoir will detail his spiritual evolution from Christianity to atheism and eventually to Catholicism. He converted to Catholicism in 2019, a turning point he has credited with providing a renewed sense of purpose.

Vance has said that his faith offered meaning he did not find through his academic and professional achievements, including his time at Yale Law School and work in finance.

The 304-page book was written by Vance himself, with writing completed intermittently beginning in 2019. Some material comes from a previously planned religious memoir that Vance had put aside in 2022.

The book will also include reflections on his time in politics, offering insight into how faith has shaped his leadership and decision-making.

Potential 2028 Presidential Speculation

The announcement is likely to intensify speculation about a possible 2028 presidential campaign.

Presidential hopefuls frequently publish books before launching campaigns, using them to introduce their ideas and expand their national profile.

Several potential Democratic candidates have already published or announced books, including:

While Vance has acknowledged the speculation, he has said he is not currently focused on a presidential run and would wait until after the 2026 midterm elections to consider such a decision.

From “Hillbilly Elegy” to Vice Presidency

Vance first rose to national prominence with “Hillbilly Elegy,” his 2016 memoir about growing up in Appalachia and working-class America. The book became a bestseller and gained renewed attention after Donald Trump’s surprise 2016 presidential victory.

Many readers viewed the book as a window into the political dynamics that helped propel Trump to power.

The memoir was later adapted into a 2020 film directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams.

Vance initially criticized Trump but later became a close political ally. He was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio in 2022 and selected by Trump as his running mate two years later.

At 41, Vance is one of the youngest vice presidents in modern history, comparable to Richard Nixon’s tenure under President Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s.

Vice President Writing While in Office

Vice presidents including Walter Mondale and Mike Pence have published books, but Vance would be among the few to release a personal memoir while serving in office.

The release reflects growing public interest in Vance’s political and personal journey.

Vance Family Expands Public Presence

The book announcement comes shortly after Second Lady Usha Vance launched a podcast titled “Storytime with the Second Lady,” designed to promote reading among children.

The Vance family currently has three young children, and Usha Vance is expecting their fourth child — a boy — due in late July.

Together, the developments highlight the growing national profile of the vice president and his family as political speculation builds.
