Deep Look

UFC Cage Rises on White House Lawn

Construction crews are transforming the South Lawn of the White House into a temporary UFC arena ahead of a major fight event planned for June 14.

The octagon-shaped cage will host a special mixed martial arts card connected to nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The event also coincides with the 80th birthday of Donald Trump.

Massive Arena Planned for South Lawn

Online renderings show a large wire-mesh octagon surrounded by:

  • Red, white and blue staging
  • Giant video screens
  • Patriotic star-and-stripe decorations
  • Thousands of temporary seats
  • Ringside seating for a marching band

Trump recently described the setup as “a 5,000-seat arena right outside the front door of the White House.”

Additional viewing screens will reportedly be placed at the nearby Ellipse, where fans without arena access can watch the fights.

The UFC said it plans to distribute as many as 85,000 free tickets for viewing areas at both locations.

“I have never seen anybody want anything so much as people want those tickets,” Trump said. “That’s gonna be something.”

UFC Card Draws Mixed Reactions

The event’s fight lineup has generated mixed reactions online.

The card will feature two championship bouts:

  • Alex Pereira vs. Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title
  • Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title matchup

Some UFC fans criticized the card online, calling it underwhelming for such a historic venue.

Still, the White House location itself has generated enormous public attention and demand for tickets.

Event Part of America 250 Celebration

The UFC showcase is one piece of the broader “America 250” celebration marking the nation’s semiquincentennial anniversary.

Additional events planned include:

  • An IndyCar race near the White House
  • The Great American State Fair on the National Mall
  • Patriotic ceremonies and entertainment events nationwide

The White House UFC event is expected to become one of the most visually striking parts of the celebration schedule.

Trump Expands White House Renovation Projects

The temporary UFC arena also adds to Trump’s broader push to reshape the White House grounds and surrounding federal buildings.

Recent projects include:

  • Renovating the Rose Garden
  • Building a Mar-a-Lago-style patio
  • Installing new flagpoles
  • Creating a Presidential Walk of Fame
  • Renovating the Palm Room
  • Updating the Lincoln Bedroom bathroom
  • Demolishing the East Wing for a large ballroom project

Trump has also proposed repainting the nearby Eisenhower Executive Office Building and building a 250-foot arch near the Lincoln Memorial.

According to organizers, weigh-ins for the UFC event are expected to take place near the Lincoln Memorial before the main fight card at the White House.

White House Event Blends Politics and Entertainment

The UFC event reflects Trump’s long-standing relationship with combat sports and his close ties to UFC leadership.

The unusual combination of sports spectacle, patriotic branding and presidential imagery has drawn intense attention both from supporters and critics.

The White House has not released additional security details for the event, though preparations are already visible across the South Lawn.
