Deep Look

Obama Presidential Center Opens In Chicago

Former President Barack Obama’s long-awaited presidential center is preparing to welcome the public, offering an expansive look at both his historic presidency and personal journey while creating a community-focused destination on Chicago’s South Side.

The Obama Presidential Center officially opens on Juneteenth following a dedication ceremony attended by dignitaries and supporters. Ahead of the opening, thousands of visitors—including students, journalists and family members of staff—have been given an early look at the nearly 20-acre campus as final preparations continue.

The approximately $850 million project reflects Obama’s deep involvement in its design and mission. From architectural details to community programming, the former president’s influence can be seen throughout the sprawling complex.

“This is a safe space for people to come and, yes, reflect on the historic moments of this presidency and the campaigns, but also to come together as a community to think about what change you can bring to your own neighborhood,” said Josh Harris, the Obama Foundation’s vice president of public engagement.

A New Kind Of Presidential Museum

The centerpiece of the campus is a state-of-the-art museum tower that takes a different approach from traditional presidential libraries.

Rather than displaying official government documents, the museum relies heavily on digital technology and interactive exhibits that allow visitors to engage directly with major moments from Obama’s life and presidency.

One of the most popular attractions is expected to be a full-scale replica of the Oval Office.

Visitors can sit behind the Resolute Desk, explore recreated presidential surroundings and examine personal items connected to Obama’s years in the White House.

Inside a desk drawer, guests can find a copy of the handwritten letter left by former President George W. Bush and Obama’s famous BlackBerry smartphone.

“We want to make sure that people from all walks of life have the opportunity sit behind the Resolute Desk,” Harris said.

“You think about the possibilities that if a young organizer from the South Side of Chicago can be president, you can be president too.”

Other exhibits explore major policy achievements, including the Affordable Care Act and immigration reforms, alongside deeply personal moments from Obama’s presidency.

One exhibit highlights Obama’s emotional rendition of “Amazing Grace” during a 2015 eulogy following the deadly church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

Visitors will also encounter reflection spaces designed to encourage civic engagement and personal action.

“We’re passing that baton and inviting people to bring change home, however change may be defined, both small or large,” said museum director Louise Bernard.

Michelle Obama’s Historic Fashion Collection

Among the most anticipated attractions is a display featuring several outfits worn by former First Lady Michelle Obama during some of the most memorable moments of the Obama presidency.

During the center’s groundbreaking ceremony in 2021, Obama joked about the likely popularity of the exhibit.

“We want this center to be more than a static museum or a source of archival research,” Obama said.

“It won’t just be a collection of campaign memorabilia or Michelle’s ballgowns, although I know everybody will come see those.”

The collection includes roughly a dozen dresses displayed behind glass.

Among them is the black-and-red Narciso Rodriguez dress Michelle Obama wore on Election Night in Chicago after Barack Obama’s historic victory in 2008.

Visitors can also touch fabric samples from several garments, including the rose-gold Atelier Versace gown she wore during her final White House state dinner in 2016.

Reflecting The Obamas’ Personal Lives

The center is located near neighborhoods that played a major role in the Obama family’s lives.

Barack Obama launched his political career in Chicago, taught law at the University of Chicago and lived nearby with his family. Michelle Obama was raised on the city’s South Side.

The campus reflects many of the couple’s personal interests.

A lifelong basketball enthusiast, Obama requested a professional-grade basketball court enclosed with glass panels that will host community activities and youth programs.

Michelle Obama designed a community garden where vegetables and fruits are already growing.

Public grilling stations are also available, inspired by Obama’s fond memories of spending time outdoors in Chicago parks.

“President Obama always talked about his feelings of being in Chicago and one of his memorable moments was grilling in the park,” Harris said.

Art, Literature And Community Spaces

The center places a strong emphasis on education, culture and civic engagement.

A major public gathering space named John Lewis Plaza honors the late congressman and civil rights icon.

Throughout the campus, visitors will find commissioned artworks celebrating history, social justice and community leadership.

Inside a new Chicago Public Library branch, a massive 70-foot mural highlights literary legends such as Walt Whitman, James Baldwin and Toni Morrison.

The center’s presidential reading room houses thousands of books personally selected by Barack and Michelle Obama.

The collection includes presidential biographies, classic literature and contemporary bestsellers.

One of Obama’s favorite features is a pair of high-backed striped reading chairs inspired by furniture in his own home.

Balancing Accessibility And Admission Costs

The museum’s $30 admission fee makes it the most expensive presidential museum or library in the United States.

Foundation officials argue the cost reflects the advanced technology and extensive visitor experience offered throughout the facility.

However, they emphasize that much of the campus remains free to the public.

Visitors can access the library, playground, picnic areas, basketball court, sledding hill and outdoor gathering spaces without purchasing a ticket.

Even the museum tower’s top floor, which offers panoramic views of Chicago, is free.

“The idea behind this institution, this campus, was to make it accessible to as many people as possible,” Harris said.

With its combination of presidential history, community programming, public art and civic engagement, the Obama Presidential Center aims to serve not only as a museum but as a lasting community resource and gathering place for future generations.
