NEW YORK — A person was taken into custody Monday morning after allegedly deploying an incendiary device outside a federal building in Lower Manhattan, according to the FBI.

Smoke and flames erupted on the sidewalk outside 26 Federal Plaza.

The FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force opened an investigation into the incident.

Fire Department Responds to 26 Federal Plaza

The New York Fire Department said it received a call at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Initial reports described an outdoor fire.

Photographs and videos from the scene showed flames and a column of black smoke rising from the sidewalk in front of the federal building.

Other images showed officers restraining a person before taking the individual away.

One Person Taken to Hospital

The Fire Department said one person was transported to a hospital following the incident.

Preliminary Information Cites Anti-ICE Material

The person taken into custody was carrying anti-ICE material, according to preliminary information gathered by law enforcement.

Mayor Mamdani Calls Incident Disturbing

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded to the incident in a social media statement.

“What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing,” Mamdani said. “I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody.”

Mamdani said his administration was communicating with law enforcement and would support the federal investigation.

Building Houses FBI and Immigration Court

The building at 26 Federal Plaza contains several government agencies and offices.

The FBI’s New York office is located there, along with a federal immigration court.

Many migrants have been arrested after leaving hearings at that immigration court.
