FBI Revives Hunt for Former Air Force Defector

The FBI is renewing efforts to capture former US Air Force counterintelligence specialist Monica Elfriede Witt by offering a $200,000 reward for information leading to her arrest and prosecution.

Federal authorities announced the reward this week as the United States and Iran remain locked in escalating conflict following the outbreak of war earlier this year.

Witt, now 47, was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2019 on multiple espionage-related charges after allegedly defecting to Iran and transmitting classified national defense information to the Iranian government.

She remains at large.

FBI Says Witt Betrayed National Security

Federal investigators accuse Witt of violating her oath to the United States by assisting Tehran after years of working inside sensitive American intelligence operations.

“Witt allegedly betrayed her oath to the Constitution more than a decade ago by defecting to Iran and providing the Iranian regime National Defense Information and likely continues to support their nefarious activities,” said Daniel Wierzbicki, special agent in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Division.

“The FBI has not forgotten and believes that during this critical moment in Iran’s history, there is someone who knows something about her whereabouts,” he added.

Former Counterintelligence Specialist Had Access to Classified Operations

Witt served in the US Air Force from 1997 through 2008, where she received specialized training in the Farsi language and worked on classified counterintelligence missions.

According to prosecutors, her assignments included operations in the Middle East involving highly sensitive national security information.

After leaving active military service, Witt later worked as a contractor for the Defense Department.

Federal investigators say her background gave her access to valuable intelligence involving American defense programs, personnel and overseas operations.

Iran Conferences Led to Defection

The Justice Department previously alleged Witt traveled to Iran in 2013 after being invited to two all-expense-paid conferences that promoted anti-Western ideology and criticized American values.

Officials say the events were linked to Iranian influence operations aimed at recruiting insiders with US intelligence or military backgrounds.

Before her departure, prosecutors say the FBI had already warned Witt about concerns involving her activities and foreign contacts.

Authorities said she assured investigators she would not provide sensitive information if she returned to Iran.

According to the indictment, she later defected and allegedly began cooperating with Iranian intelligence services.

Prosecutors Say Witt Endangered US Personnel

Federal officials accuse Witt of exposing classified defense information and helping Iran identify American intelligence personnel.

According to court documents, she allegedly conducted research for Iranian authorities that helped target former colleagues inside the US government.

Investigators say her actions endangered both US personnel and their families stationed overseas.

The Justice Department also alleged her disclosures threatened sensitive intelligence programs and operations tied to national defense.

Timing of FBI Push Raises Questions

The FBI did not publicly explain why the agency chose now to revive attention on Witt’s case.

However, the renewed focus comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran as the US-Iran war continues following military escalation that began on Feb. 28.

National security analysts note the timing may reflect broader counterintelligence concerns tied to Iranian espionage activity during wartime.

The conflict has already intensified fears about cyberattacks, intelligence leaks and foreign influence campaigns targeting US interests.

Long History of Espionage Tensions Between US and Iran

The case highlights decades of hostility and intelligence warfare between the United States and Iran.

American officials have repeatedly accused Tehran of running espionage operations, cyber campaigns and covert recruitment efforts aimed at US military personnel, contractors and intelligence officers.

Iran has denied many of the accusations while accusing Washington of conducting its own covert operations against the Islamic Republic.

The Monica Witt case remains one of the most high-profile examples of an American intelligence-trained individual allegedly defecting to Iran.
