Deep Look

London Stabbing of 2 Jewish Men Declared Terror Incident

LONDON — Metropolitan Police have declared the stabbing of two Jewish men in London a terrorist incident, deepening concerns over rising antisemitic violence across the United Kingdom.

Authorities said the attack happened Wednesday in the Golders Green area of northwest London, a neighborhood known for its large and long-established Jewish community. Two men, aged 34 and 76, were hospitalized after suffering knife wounds. Police arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Investigators are now examining whether the assault specifically targeted Jewish residents and whether it may be connected to a series of recent attacks against Jewish institutions across the British capital.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that counterterror officers are leading the investigation as officials work to determine the suspect’s background, motive, and any broader links to organized threats against the Jewish community.

Earlier reports had not officially classified the incident as terrorism, but the latest police update elevated the case significantly after reviewing evidence and witness accounts.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer strongly condemned the violence, describing it as an attack on the country as a whole.

“Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

The Jewish neighborhood security group Shomrim said the suspect was seen carrying a knife and allegedly targeting visibly Jewish pedestrians.

The organization said a suspect “was seen running along Golders Green Road armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public.”

According to Shomrim, members of the organization detained the suspect before police arrived. Officers later used a stun gun during the arrest.

Surveillance footage circulating from the scene showed a man standing near a bus stop putting on a kippah, the traditional Jewish skullcap, before another individual armed with a knife rushed toward him.

Police also said the suspect allegedly attempted to stab responding officers, though no officers were injured during the confrontation.

The two victims were transported to the hospital and remain in stable condition, according to authorities.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said investigators are carefully reviewing every possible motive.

Police are also exploring whether the stabbing could be linked to a series of recent arson attacks involving Jewish properties in London.

In recent weeks, fires targeted Jewish sites including charity ambulances in Golders Green and a synagogue located just a few miles away. While no one was injured in those incidents, multiple arrests were made involving suspects ranging from teenagers to adults in their 40s.

Counterterror officers are investigating whether some of those arson attacks were carried out by criminal proxies linked to Iran.

The British government has repeatedly accused Iran of using proxy actors to conduct hostile operations across Europe, particularly against opposition media outlets and Jewish communities.

Britain’s domestic intelligence service, MI5, has warned about the scale of the threat, saying more than 20 “potentially lethal” Iran-backed plots were disrupted during the year ending in October.

For residents of Golders Green, the attack has added to growing fear and frustration.

“It happens in Israel, but happening on our own doorstep, of course it’s shocking,” said local resident Moishe Grunfeld. “I have kids, I have grandchildren.”

Golders Green has long served as one of the main centers of Jewish life in Britain. The neighborhood is home to kosher restaurants, Jewish schools, dozens of synagogues, and a diverse mix of communities from Asian and Middle Eastern backgrounds.

Britain’s Jewish population numbers around 300,000 people, making it a small but historic part of the country’s social and cultural fabric.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also issued a firm statement condemning antisemitism.

“There must be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said.

Religious leaders said public condemnation alone is no longer enough.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis warned that Jewish communities are facing sustained intimidation and violence that demands stronger national action.

“This must be a moment that demands meaningful action from every institution, every community, every leader and every decent person in our country. This is a hatred that we must face down together,” he said.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog echoed that concern and called for global attention to what he described as a dangerous rise in anti-Jewish hatred.

“In one of the great capital cities of the West, it has become dangerous to openly walk the streets as a Jew,” Herzog posted on X. “This is an unacceptable situation.”

Antisemitic incidents across Britain have risen sharply since the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel and the war in Gaza that followed.

According to the Community Security Trust, 3,700 antisemitic incidents were recorded across the U.K. in 2025, compared with 1,662 incidents in 2022.

In October 2025, another deadly antisemitic attack shocked the country when a man drove his car into worshippers gathered outside a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur and fatally stabbed one person. Another person died after being accidentally shot by police during the incident.

Wednesday’s attack in Golders Green now adds to mounting concerns that Jewish communities in Britain are facing an increasingly dangerous environment, with leaders demanding stronger protection and urgent action.
