Taylor Swift and Beyoncé Join America’s Audio Canon

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have officially entered one of America’s most prestigious music archives.

The Library of Congress announced Thursday that recordings from both global superstars are among the 25 new additions to the National Recording Registry for 2026.

Swift’s blockbuster pop album “1989” and Beyoncé’s iconic anthem “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” were selected for preservation because of their cultural, historical, and artistic significance.

The National Recording Registry honors recordings considered essential parts of America’s sound heritage.

“1989” Becomes Registry’s Newest Recording

Taylor Swift’s “1989” achieved another historic milestone by becoming the newest recording ever inducted into the registry.

Released in 2014, the album transformed Swift from a country-pop crossover star into a full-scale global pop phenomenon.

The project produced multiple chart-topping hits including:

  • “Blank Space”
  • “Shake It Off”
  • “Style”
  • “Bad Blood”

The album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and helped redefine mainstream pop music during the 2010s.

This marks Swift’s first entry into the National Recording Registry.

Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” Recognized

Beyoncé also earned her first induction into the archive with “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”

Released in 2008, the song became one of the defining pop and R&B tracks of its era.

Its instantly recognizable beat, viral choreography, and empowering message turned the track into a global cultural phenomenon.

The song helped cement Beyoncé’s status as one of the most influential performers of the 21st century.

The iconic black-and-white music video also became one of the internet’s earliest viral pop-culture moments.

Chaka Khan, Vince Gill and The Go-Go’s Honored

Several legendary artists from different genres also joined the registry this year.

Chaka Khan’s genre-crossing hit “I Feel for You” earned induction for blending pop, funk, R&B, and hip-hop influences in groundbreaking ways.

Country music star Vince Gill was honored for his emotional ballad “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” one of the most respected songs in modern country music.

The Go-Go’s debut album “Beauty and the Beat” also entered the archive.

Released in 1981, the album became a landmark moment for women in rock music, helping establish The Go-Go’s as one of the first successful all-female bands to write and perform their own songs while topping mainstream charts.

Wide Range of Music Styles Recognized

The 2026 registry class spans multiple decades and genres.

Other recordings selected include:

Classic singles by Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Byrds, José Feliciano, and Paul Anka were also inducted.

The selections reflected the registry’s effort to preserve recordings that shaped American culture across generations.

“Doom” Soundtrack Makes Unusual Entry

One of the most unconventional additions this year was the soundtrack from the influential 1993 video game “Doom.”

The game’s aggressive rock-inspired soundtrack became hugely influential in gaming culture and helped shape the identity of early first-person shooter games.

Its induction reflects how video game music is increasingly being recognized as an important part of modern cultural history.

Historic Boxing Broadcast Also Added

The registry also honored the radio broadcast of “The Fight of the Century,” the legendary 1971 heavyweight boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

The historic fight represented one of the biggest sporting and media events of its era.

The inclusion highlighted the registry’s broader focus on preserving historically important audio recordings beyond music alone.

Library of Congress Highlights Cultural Importance

Acting Librarian of Congress Robert Newlen said recorded sound remains a critical part of American cultural identity.

“Music and recorded sound are essential, wonderful parts of our daily lives and our national heritage,” Newlen said.

“The National Recording Registry works to preserve our national playlist for generations to come.”

The registry receives thousands of public nominations annually before final selections are made.

The Library of Congress said more than 3,000 nominations were submitted for consideration this year.

Registry Continues Expanding Cultural Legacy

The National Recording Registry was created to preserve recordings considered culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

Selections span music, speeches, broadcasts, and audio recordings that helped shape American life.

This year’s class reflects the evolving nature of cultural influence — combining classic artists, modern pop superstars, country legends, gaming history, and historic sports moments into one archive.

The addition of Swift and Beyoncé also signals the growing recognition of contemporary pop music’s long-term historical importance.
