Deep Look

Texas Republicans Head Into High-Stakes Senate Runoff

Texas Republicans will decide Tuesday whether longtime incumbent John Cornyn or Attorney General Ken Paxton becomes the party’s nominee for U.S. Senate.

The runoff has evolved into one of the country’s most closely watched Republican primary battles because of its connection to Donald Trump and the president’s continued effort to reshape the GOP around personal loyalty.

Trump’s Endorsement Changed the Race

Trump endorsed Paxton on May 19, giving the Texas attorney general a major boost during the final stretch of the campaign.

While Trump stopped short of harshly attacking Cornyn in the endorsement announcement, he emphasized that the senator “was not supportive” during difficult periods of Trump’s political career.

The endorsement turned the runoff into another test of Trump’s power within Republican primaries nationwide.

Cornyn Faces Strongest Political Threat in Years

Cornyn, seeking a fifth Senate term, finished first in the March primary but failed to secure enough support to avoid a runoff.

Historically, incumbent senators in Texas rarely lose primaries. According to the report, only two incumbent U.S. senators from Texas have lost a primary election in the last century.

Cornyn’s campaign has emphasized:

  • Senate experience
  • Conservative voting record
  • Support for Trump priorities
  • National security credentials

But Paxton has focused heavily on loyalty to Trump and criticism of Washington Republicans.

Rural Trump Counties Could Decide Outcome

The report highlights how voting patterns in heavily pro-Trump counties may ultimately determine the winner.

Paxton performed especially well in rural counties where Trump won more than 80% of the vote during the 2024 presidential election.

Although these counties are less populated, collectively they represented roughly one-fifth of Republican primary voters statewide.

Cornyn performed better in suburban and more moderate counties, particularly areas carried by Kamala Harris in 2024.

Democrats See Opening in Texas

The runoff is also drawing national attention because Democrats increasingly believe Texas could become competitive in the general election.

The eventual Republican nominee will face Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in November.

Midterm elections traditionally punish the president’s party, creating additional uncertainty for Republicans despite Texas remaining a GOP stronghold.

Massive Spending Defines Campaign

Advertising has dominated the runoff campaign.

Outside groups and campaign organizations have spent enormous sums attacking both candidates, particularly focusing on:

The race has become one of the most expensive Senate primary battles in Texas history.

Key Election Details

Texas polls close at:

  • 8 p.m. ET across most of the state
  • 9 p.m. ET in western Texas counties using Mountain Time

According to the report:

Counties are expected to release early and absentee results shortly after polls close Tuesday evening.

Other Important Texas Runoffs

Texas voters will also decide numerous congressional and statewide runoff contests Tuesday.

Among the most notable:

  • Christian Menefee vs. Al Green
  • Julie Johnson vs. Colin Allred

The contests follow congressional redistricting changes Republicans approved in 2025 to protect House control.
