Spurs Thunder Western Conference Finals Quick Looks

Wembanyama Leads Spurs to Blowout Victory

SAN ANTONIO — Facing elimination and needing a season-saving performance, Victor Wembanyama delivered exactly what the San Antonio Spurs needed.

The franchise star recorded 28 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks as the Spurs overwhelmed the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 on Thursday night, extending the Western Conference Finals to a decisive Game 7.

The convincing victory sends the series back to Oklahoma City, where the winner will earn a trip to the NBA Finals and a matchup against the New York Knicks.

After suffering a disappointing loss in Game 5, San Antonio responded with one of its most complete performances of the postseason, controlling the game on both ends of the floor and never allowing the Thunder to establish any momentum.

Spurs Respond With Urgency

San Antonio entered Game 6 with its season on the line after dropping a 127-114 decision in Oklahoma City two nights earlier.

The difference in intensity was evident from the opening tip.

Wembanyama explained that the desperation of an elimination game helped sharpen the team’s focus.

“(Playing with desperation) just feels like it erases kind of all the little mistakes that we do that are human nature, whether it’s in the regular season or previous games,” Wembanyama said. “Just got to fight that all the time and put your backs against the wall. It feels like it’s the best opportunity to be able to play.”

The Spurs displayed that urgency throughout the contest, limiting turnovers, contesting shots, and winning critical battles on the glass.

Balanced Offensive Attack Powers San Antonio

While Wembanyama once again served as the centerpiece of the offense, the Spurs received strong contributions from multiple players.

Rookie guard Dylan Harper scored 18 points and provided consistent scoring pressure throughout the game. Stephon Castle added 17 points, while Devin Vassell chipped in 12 points and energized the crowd with two emphatic blocked shots.

The balanced attack prevented Oklahoma City from focusing exclusively on stopping Wembanyama and allowed San Antonio to maintain offensive rhythm from start to finish.

The Spurs repeatedly found success attacking the paint while also knocking down key perimeter shots when the Thunder defense collapsed.

Defensive Dominance Changes the Game

The turning point came during a stunning stretch in the third quarter.

With the game still within reach at halftime, San Antonio completely shut down Oklahoma City’s offense after the break. The Thunder failed to score for eight consecutive minutes while the Spurs unleashed a devastating 22-0 run.

The scoring burst transformed a competitive game into a rout, pushing San Antonio’s lead to 92-64 late in the third quarter.

Stephon Castle credited the team’s defensive commitment for the turnaround.

“I just think all of our focus and attention was on the defensive end,” Castle said. “I don’t think scoring against them has been a problem for us. I think just our self-infliced mistakes, like turnovers and allowing them to get offensive rebounds and easy buckets is what slows us down.”

By eliminating second-chance opportunities and transition baskets, San Antonio forced the Thunder into one of their worst offensive performances of the postseason.

Thunder Struggle to Find Answers

Oklahoma City entered the game hoping to close out the series and advance to the NBA Finals. Instead, the defending champions were overwhelmed by San Antonio’s energy and execution.

League MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled throughout the night, finishing with a team-high 15 points while shooting just 6-for-18 from the field.

The Thunder never found offensive consistency after halftime and appeared frustrated by the Spurs’ defensive pressure.

Head coach Mark Daigneault admitted his team was unable to deliver the decisive punch needed in the third quarter.

“I don’t know that it was necessarily anything we did wrong,” Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault said. “I thought we were ready to play. I felt confident going into the game, and I felt confident at halftime. It had the makings of a road win if we could be the team that threw the punch in the third and they were the team that did that.”

The loss marked one of Oklahoma City’s most lopsided defeats of the postseason.

Wembanyama Continues Historic Postseason

The latest performance added another milestone to Wembanyama’s rapidly growing playoff résumé.

The 7-foot-4 superstar joined franchise legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan as the only players in Spurs history to record at least five playoff games with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a single postseason.

His impact was immediate.

Wembanyama opened the game by knocking down two three-pointers and blocking a Gilgeous-Alexander layup attempt within the first 90 seconds. He finished the first quarter with 11 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a block, setting the tone for the remainder of the evening.

Reflecting on the victory, Wembanyama emphasized patience and trust.

“I think we were consistent and we did what we needed to do,” Wembanyama said. “Trusted the game, trusted the basketball gods.”

Physical Series Continues

The intensity that has defined the Western Conference Finals remained evident throughout Game 6.

A heated moment occurred in the second quarter when Thunder center Chet Holmgren exchanged words and contact with Devin Vassell after the Spurs forward rejected Holmgren’s dunk attempt.

The sequence added another chapter to an increasingly physical and emotional series that has featured momentum swings and growing rivalry between the young stars on both rosters.

Holmgren finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds despite the loss.

Jalen Williams Returns

The Thunder also welcomed back Jalen Williams, who had been sidelined since reinjuring his hamstring during Game 2.

Williams played 10 minutes but was limited to one point and did not make a field goal. His return provided Oklahoma City with additional depth, though he was unable to significantly impact the outcome.

The Thunder will hope additional recovery time allows him to contribute more effectively in the decisive finale.

Winner-Take-All Game 7 Awaits

With the series now tied, both teams will head to Oklahoma City for a highly anticipated Game 7 on Saturday night.

The stakes could not be higher.

The winner will claim the Western Conference championship and advance to the NBA Finals, where the New York Knicks await after capturing the Eastern Conference title.

For San Antonio, Game 6 proved that it can dominate the defending champions when playing at its highest level. For Oklahoma City, the challenge will be regrouping quickly after a difficult defeat and protecting home court in the biggest game of the season.
