Deep Look: Zohran Mamdani’s First 100 Days Bring Star Power to NYC
NEW YORK — In his first 100 days as mayor, Zohran Mamdani has introduced a new style of leadership to New York City — one that blends politics, celebrity culture, and social media-driven governance.
From packed news conferences to viral videos promoting city services, Mamdani’s administration has generated a level of public excitement rarely seen in municipal government. The 34-year-old Democrat has leaned heavily into his public appeal, using celebrity endorsements and digital engagement to highlight everyday city operations.
Supporters frequently gather at Mamdani’s appearances, and his administration has reported early successes in boosting participation in government programs. The mayor has also temporarily eased tensions with President Donald Trump, creating a cautious political detente despite their ideological differences.
Still, questions remain about whether Mamdani can convert his popularity into long-term policy achievements. Critics continue to raise concerns about his progressive positions, including previous criticisms of the police department and Israel.
Jay Jacobs, chair of New York’s Democratic Party, acknowledged early progress despite past reservations.
“It’s early but so far, so good,” Jacobs said. “We may not agree on everything philosophically, but he is getting the job done.”
Social Media Governance
Mamdani’s approach to leadership has emphasized direct communication with New Yorkers. During a winter storm, he used social media to recruit additional snow shovelers, drawing thousands of volunteers.
Another video promoting New York’s emergency alert system attracted more than 50,000 new subscribers within a week, according to city officials.
The mayor has also partnered with celebrities to promote civic engagement. Alongside New York Liberty star Natasha Cloud, Mamdani launched a bracket-style competition allowing residents to vote on neighborhood repairs. The initiative drew more than 21,000 votes within weeks.
To promote his childcare initiative for two-year-olds, Mamdani recruited rapper Cardi B to judge a jingle contest aimed at creating a theme song for the program.
“The challenge that we set out for ourselves was to work as hard and as fast as New Yorkers do,” Mamdani said as he approached his 100th day in office.
Critics Push Back
While Mamdani’s energetic style has energized supporters, critics argue that the mayor risks focusing too much on image rather than substance.
During a cold-weather emergency, Mamdani’s appearance on “The Tonight Show” drew criticism from opponents who said it was insensitive while homelessness-related deaths were rising.
Curtis Sliwa, Mamdani’s Republican opponent in the mayoral race, criticized what he described as excessive showmanship.
“Too much styling and profiling,” Sliwa said, pointing to persistent challenges including homelessness, housing, and infrastructure.
However, Sliwa also acknowledged that Mamdani has brought a sense of stability compared to previous leadership.
Budget Challenges Loom
Beyond public engagement, Mamdani faces significant fiscal challenges. Earlier this year, the mayor warned of a major budget gap that could require either tax increases or spending cuts.
Mamdani publicly called for a tax increase on wealthy residents, putting pressure on New York Governor Kathy Hochul to support a “millionaires tax.” Hochul, however, has opposed the proposal.
Tensions also emerged between the mayor and the City Council after lawmakers proposed alternative solutions. Mamdani criticized the plan and publicly called out Council Speaker Julie Menin in a video, prompting backlash and online criticism from supporters.
Budget negotiations remain unresolved and could define Mamdani’s early administration.
Andrew Rein, president of the Citizens Budget Commission, said Mamdani faces an especially difficult budget process but noted that his communication skills may help.
“When he uses his communications skills to get people more invested… that is going to be a great win,” Rein said.
Star Power Remains Strong
Mamdani’s popularity has remained high among supporters. During his election celebration, crowds gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the mayor-elect, with some comparing the scene to a concert-like atmosphere.
That enthusiasm continues. Tourists and residents frequently gather outside City Hall for selfies, hoping to spot the mayor.
During a recent announcement at Bellevue Hospital, large crowds gathered as Mamdani unveiled a plan to transfer seriously ill inmates from Rikers Island to medical facilities. Hospital staff and visitors recorded the event, cheering as he entered.
Ricardo Granados, a retiree who attended the event, praised Mamdani’s approach.
“I’m extremely fond of him,” Granados said. “He wants to find out who needs what and he wants to help.”
As Mamdani moves beyond his first 100 days, the challenge will be turning enthusiasm into long-term policy results. His unique blend of celebrity appeal and progressive governance has energized supporters — but fiscal realities and political opposition could determine whether his early momentum continues.
