Deep Look
Israel Launches Strike Near Beirut
Israel carried out an airstrike Thursday targeting a southern suburb of Beirut, further intensifying tensions ahead of high-level security negotiations scheduled in Washington.
The strike hit an apartment building in Choueifat, an area located near Beirut’s international airport.
Videos circulating online showed heavy smoke rising from the residential neighborhood following the attack.
Israeli officials did not immediately identify the intended target.
The strike marked the first Israeli attack near the Lebanese capital since May 6, when another operation killed a Hezbollah military official linked to the group’s elite Radwan Forces.
Ceasefire Continues to Fray
The latest escalation comes despite a ceasefire agreement brokered by Washington that officially took effect on April 17.
Violence has steadily increased in recent days as Israeli forces expanded operations deeper into southern Lebanon.
Israeli troops have crossed the Litani River and issued evacuation warnings to residents in several areas.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced broader military operations targeting Hezbollah positions.
Israeli officials say the expansion follows Hezbollah’s deployment of exploding fiber-optic drones targeting Israeli troops and northern Israeli towns.
Civilian Casualties Continue Rising
According to Lebanese authorities:
- At least 14 people were killed
- Women and children were among the dead
- A Lebanese soldier also died
- Dozens more were injured
Additional strikes hit the city of Sidon, where an Israeli drone struck an apartment building sheltering displaced families.
Five people were killed there, including journalist Hossan Zeidan, a former correspondent for Iran’s Arabic-language al-Aalam television network.
Another Israeli drone strike in Adloun reportedly hit a fleeing family’s vehicle, killing six people, including two children and their parents.
Residents Describe Chaos
Residents in targeted areas described scenes of panic and destruction.
“I was in my room when part of the wall and shattered glass fell on me, and everything was thrown into chaos,” said Sidon resident Mohammad Al-Gharbi.
“This building that was hit had six apartments occupied by poor families who had fled from the south to escape the attacks there, only to be hit here.”
Large numbers of civilians continue fleeing northern and southern combat zones as airstrikes intensify.
Hezbollah Continues Drone and Rocket Attacks
Hezbollah also intensified attacks Thursday.
The Israeli military confirmed:
- One Israeli soldier was killed
- Two reservists were wounded
- Hezbollah drones targeted northern Israel
Hezbollah stated it launched multiple attacks against Israeli troops and tanks operating near Zawtar al-Sharqieh close to Nabatiyeh.
The group says it is responding to Israeli incursions south of the Litani River.
Washington Talks Face Major Obstacles
Israeli and Lebanese military officials are scheduled to hold security discussions Friday in Washington.
The talks represent the first direct security negotiations between the two sides since the current conflict escalated.
However, Hezbollah has publicly dismissed the negotiations and instead aligned itself with Iran’s broader diplomatic position.
Pakistan continues helping mediate negotiations between Washington and Tehran tied to the larger regional conflict.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
The war has displaced more than 1 million people across Lebanon, according to estimates cited in the report.
The conflict began after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel on March 2 in support of Iran shortly after the Iran war started.
Since then:
- More than 3,269 people have been killed in Lebanon
- Over 9,800 have been wounded
- Israeli casualties include soldiers and civilians
The majority of Israeli deaths near the Lebanese border have reportedly resulted from drone attacks.
Regional Conflict Continues Expanding
The Lebanon-Israel conflict now sits at the center of wider Middle East instability involving:
- Iran negotiations
- U.S. military operations
- Strait of Hormuz tensions
- Regional ceasefire diplomacy
While Washington attempts to broker agreements to calm the region, military operations on the ground continue escalating, raising fears that diplomacy may fail to contain the broader conflict.
